It’s fair to conclude that anime is consistently advancing in terms of quality and aesthetics. This progression is not only due to technological advancements but also the growing courage of directors and creators in exploring the medium’s potential. Naoko Yamada is one such daring director, and her latest work, “The Colors Within“, seems to be a strong candidate for the informal title of “Most Beautiful Anime of the Year” (an award category that surprisingly doesn’t exist at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards).
Titled “The Colors Within“, this unique anime movie was penned by Reiko Yoshida, famously known for her work on “A Silent Voice“, and helmed by Yamada. The narrative revolves around Totsuku, a young girl who possesses the extraordinary ability to perceive the colors of people’s emotions. As she embarks on a musical journey with her friends Kimi and Rui, forming a band, Totsuku endeavors to compose songs inspired by their emotional hues. The plot promises visually stunning scenes, and with the assistance of studio Science SARU, known for its work on “Dandadan“, “The Colors Within” surpasses expectations.
Naoko Yamada Explains The Colors Within‘s Bold Aesthetic
During an interview with Deadline, Naoko Yamada discussed the inspiration behind the film’s distinctive idea and its harmony with the movie’s music. She mentioned that because Totsuko can perceive the colors of other people, which is intangible, it mirrors how people experience music. Moreover, she believed there was a profound link between the way Totsuko senses others’ colors and how viewers could connect with the film’s music and sound.
Naoko Yamada disclosed how she and Science SARU carefully crafted the tranquil and stunning visuals for the movie. “I aimed to make viewers feel peaceful, compassionate, and joyful,” she stated. In the film, Kimi is depicted in shades of blue, Rimi in green, and later on, Totsuko is revealed to be red. Yamada clarified that these colors weren’t chosen haphazardly. “These are the fundamental colors of light, and when they’re layered together, it turns white,” she explained. She further added, “The color white symbolizes the potential and future possibilities for these characters in a captivating manner.” Those paying attention might notice that Science SARU used a similar method in color-coding scenes for individual characters in Dandadan.
The Colors Within Releases This January
The film “The Colors Within” has already traveled through various film festivals, including the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, the BFI London Film Festival, and the Tokyo International Film Festival, among others. These screenings have led to a flawless 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film titled “The Colors Within” was initially screened in Japan back in 2024, but fans in the West have had to be patient for its theatrical release. Finally, it’s set to premiere in select US cinemas on January 24th and UK screens on January 31st. Some enthusiasts are optimistic that “The Colors Within” may challenge common Western stereotypes about anime movies and potentially secure a nomination for the Best Animated Feature at this year’s Academy Awards. If it does, it will likely go up against stiff competition from other notable contenders like “The Wild Robot“, the undervalued “Flow“, the sequel “Inside Out 2“, and “Memoir of a Snail“.
