In early June, Nintendo enthusiasts were taken aback and dismayed by news that Nintendo’s Punch-Out!! series was being put on an indefinite hold. More recently, reporter Imran Khan revealed a conversation he had with a developer from Next Level Games, the studio responsible for the 2009 Wii version of Punch-Out!!. According to Khan, this individual expressed that there was more criticism than anticipated towards the characters. Historically, the Punch-Out!! series contained outdated stereotypes, which the developers were attempting to distance themselves from with the reboot. However, Khan explained that these modifications didn’t go far enough, leading everyone to furrow their brows and effectively conclude the project.
Yet, the tale doesn’t conclude here. Our team at Time Extension contacted various contacts at Next Level Games to investigate the validity of the assertions about the game’s fighters. Although they preferred to stay unidentified, each developer affirmed that there was no controversy surrounding the game’s characters.
According to a source at Next Level Games, they haven’t noticed any backlash about stereotypes from the public following the launch, and there hasn’t been anything concerning since then. Therefore, they don’t think this is a strong argument for not creating another version.
A different reference appears to dismiss any significant issues, mentioning that the main debate revolved around the Sailor Moon manga in the game due to an unauthorized scene where Piston Hondo is seen reading the manga. The incident was not sanctioned by Bandai Namco prior, and it’s said to have cost Nintendo a substantial sum of money. Although this controversy is widely recognized, it appears that neither the team nor Nintendo suffered any negative repercussions regarding their characters or stereotypes portrayal. Instead, there were extensive internal discussions between the companies about preventing or reinforcing cultural stereotypes.
Imran Khan’s initial post indicated that the view he expressed could be unique to him and not shared by others. However, based on comments from Next Level Games employees, it appears this may indeed be the case. Since then, Next Level Games has not been involved in a Punch-Out!! project, but they have been actively working on other Nintendo franchises including Luigi’s Mansion and Mario Strikers.
For enthusiasts of Punch-Out!!, R – A Journey Into Lost Memories last year. Given this trend, it’s possible that Punch-Out!! could receive a similar treatment at some point in the future. The game has been on our list of anticipated Nintendo Switch remasters for quite some time now. Here’s hoping its absence from modern platforms gets addressed soon!
