In various interpretations of Batman, from his backstory to his strict no-gun policy and formidable enemies, there’s one aspect that truly stands out – his gadgets. This week’s Absolute Batman #4 has introduced perhaps the most peculiar tool yet for The Dark Knight, known as the Bat-Thumb.

Caution: Contains Spoilers about Absolute Batman Issue 4 written by Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, and Gabriel Hernandez Walta. Proceed with caution if you don’t wish to know the story developments.

In issue #4 of “Absolute Batman”, the story unfolds across two significant periods in Bruce Wayne’s life – his childhood and the current day. The past narrative delves into the aftermath of his father’s murder at the city zoo by Joe Chill, where young Bruce delivers a moving victim impact statement. This event plays a crucial role in the story’s conclusion in the present day. Additionally, we get a glimpse into Bruce’s childhood as he constructs his bat bridge and brainstorms its design, reminiscing about conversations with his father. These childhood experiences are instrumental in shaping Bruce’s adult life, particularly in the development of his Batman persona. Moreover, the present-day storyline reveals Bruce testing a new gadget: the Bat-Thumb.

To clarify, the Bat-Thumb appears to function as an adjustable adhesive grip, rather than a conventional grappling hook. In this comic, Bruce Wayne is observed testing a gadget strapped to his wrist. When he bends his hand, it activates and molds itself to whatever surface the user intends to cling onto. This device allows him to scale walls, such as when he enters through a window, providing a seemingly more convenient means of access to otherwise challenging locations.

Equipped with grappling hook-like devices attached to his wrist, this novel gadget might offer Batman an edge over traditional grappling hooks or guns due to its lighter weight and immediate accessibility. In addition, the issue showcases another intriguing device – a miniature Batmobile. However, unlike Batman driving it personally, this compact vehicle is remotely controlled and used by Batman to disable a truckload of weapons before confronting the criminals transporting them into Gotham.

Absolute Batman #4 is on sale now.
