In his recent contributions to VGC, Christopher Dring (formerly of GamesIndustry.biz) proposes an intriguing observation: One unforeseen advantage of Xbox’s Game Pass subscription for Sony is that specific titles added to the service can significantly influence PlayStation sales.
In an industry discussion at InstallBaseForum (credit to PSU), Dring was inquired about his perspective on how Microsoft’s subscription-based Game Pass has influenced the high-end game market. He suggested that it could be a situation where it presents both advantages and disadvantages, potentially diminishing sales for big blockbuster games such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, yet surprisingly boosting sales for PS5. In more detail, he elaborated:
The subscription-based Game Pass may have a dual impact on the market, causing a decrease in sales for prominent blockbuster titles like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, while simultaneously fueling sales on PS5. This seemingly paradoxical outcome can be attributed to the fact that subscribers to Game Pass have unlimited access to a vast library of games, potentially reducing their need or incentive to purchase individual blockbuster titles. However, these same subscribers might still choose to buy other games for platforms like PS5, leading to an increase in sales on this platform.
It’s often mentioned that games available on Game Pass may lose about 80% of their anticipated premium sales on Xbox. However, this percentage is lower for big mainstream releases. For example, notice the low chart positions of Hellblade 2, Indiana Jones, and Starfield on Xbox. These titles seem to have been affected by Game Pass. But, if a game is released on multiple platforms, it can be advantageous because the increased player base on Xbox might boost sales on other platforms like PlayStation.
It’s clear that Game Pass contributes to broadening the variety of games that an average subscriber encounters in a year. This is something Dring acknowledges, stating: “We find that many people only play Call of Duty. If some of these individuals choose to get Call of Duty this year through Game Pass and then decide to try out other games on the platform – games they wouldn’t have played otherwise – it’s difficult to argue that’s a negative outcome.
