Father Brown star teases ballroom dancing episode with Angela Rippon

In my excitement as a film enthusiast, I can’t help but share that the forthcoming twelfth season of Father Brown promises some stellar appearances! Actors like Denis Lawson, Simon Day, Colin McFarlane, Anita Dobson, Robert Wilfort, and the brilliant Felicity Montagu are set to grace our screens. Can’t wait to see what they bring to the table!

This upcoming season will feature Angela Rippon, a broadcaster and journalist, who is returning to the realm of ballroom dancing. After hosting BBC’s Come Dancing in the ’80s and ’90s, and later participating as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing in 2023, she will once again dance in a special episode with a focus on dancing.

In “The Lord of the Dance,” an episode we’re discussing, Rippon assumes the role of The Dancing Duchess, who is the host of a dance competition on television. It’s here where the character Brenda, portrayed by Ruby-May Martinwood, decides to participate.

She shared: “Being a dancer myself, I enjoy opportunities for some physical activity. John McCrea was simply delightful to dance with. With several skilled dancers returning, the atmosphere buzzed, and the performances were top-notch.

Kirsty, our talented choreographer, presented fantastic concepts. There’s also a tender side to Brenda that adds a lovely touch. Furthermore, the costumes were breathtakingly beautiful; some of their designs were truly awe-inspiring.

Typically, Brenda has a more masculine style, but for the contest, she takes a step out of her comfort zone and chooses to dress more femininely. As a result, she performs quite admirably.

Working with Rippon, Martinwood expressed how “fantastic” it was, followed by: “We often get terrific guests, especially this year. And yes, she’s a captivating personality.

As a devoted fan, I’d say Brenda seems a bit apprehensive about her TV debut. She appears to relish excelling at things, but the thought of being watched by many doesn’t seem to be her cup of tea. There’s a side of her that enjoys seeking attention, yet when it comes to showcasing her skills, I don’t believe she’s comfortable with that spotlight.

As a movie critic, I can empathize with this character’s predicament. She harbors a deep affection for dance, an intimacy she nurtures in the privacy of her home, surrounded by familiar comforts like the radio and Father Brown sipping his tea. Yet, the thought of performing in front of a vast audience leaves her trembling with fear. This apprehension, I believe, stems from the stark contrast between her cozy, secluded dance sessions and the daunting spectacle of a public stage. It’s not the dance itself she fears, but rather the spotlight that makes her heart race.

In the year 2022, Martinwood made her debut in the charming crime drama series. Her first appearance was a single episode. Later on, in the year 2023, she returned to the show, becoming part of the main cast. This transition occurred when several original cast members decided to depart and new faces joined the production.

Burton added: “He was absolutely right, because they are fabulous.”
