Will Rogers’ Historic Home Destroyed in Devastating Palisades Fire

The historic home of late actor Will Rogers was lost in the Los Angeles fires.

In the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, a wildfire that was one of several burning across Southern California rapidly consumed over 17,000 acres, fueled by winds as strong as a hurricane. As a result, more than 2,000 buildings were destroyed in its path. Among the structures lost in the aftermath of this destruction were the ranch house of the famous American vaudeville performer and the historic buildings at Will Rogers State Historic Park.

Armando Quintero, State Parks Director, expressed his sorrow over the loss of precious natural and cultural resources due to the destructive fires in Los Angeles. He stated this in a statement released on January 8th. Since yesterday afternoon, he has been directing all available resources towards the emergency response and is working hard to safeguard as much as possible at nearby state parks that have been affected by these fires.

During the mid-1930s, Rogers gained immense popularity following his successful vaudeville acts. He soon became recognized as a prominent figure in radio broadcasting, cinema, and was an enthusiastic aviator. This renowned celebrity, who met an unfortunate end in a plane crash at 55, later acquired a sprawling ranch encompassing 359 acres in Pacific Palisades. The estate included a substantial ranch house, equestrian trails, stables, and even a golf course.

However, tragically, the ranch – once turned into a historic state park following Betty Blake’s generous donation of the land in 1944 – fell victim to the rampant fires sweeping across California.

In addition to destroying cherished landmarks and historical buildings, the continuing fires have compelled at least 130,000 residents to flee their neighborhoods, abandoning their houses and possessions. Some people, like Jamie Lee Curtis, are unsure if they will have a home to return to, while others such as Paris Hilton, Mandy Moore, and Billy Crystal, have received the tragic news that their homes have been destroyed.

Each corner of our house holds a piece of our hearts, filled with treasured memories that remain dear. We’re naturally saddened by this turn of events, but with the support of our children and friends, we’ll find a way to move forward.
