DC vs. Vampires: World War V” by Matt Rosenberg and Otto Schmidt, carries on the narrative of a world devastated by a vampire pandemic. While it shares similarities with “DCeased”, “DC vs. Vampires” stands out due to the distinct vision of its creators, Rosenberg and Schmidt, which is evident in the latest installment. In “World War V”, the tentative peace between humans and the rising vampire population has come to an end. Both factions are scouring for a child linked to Mister Miracle and Big Barda, and issue six reveals the consequences of this search. This leads to Aquaman‘s peril as the true danger behind the young girl is finally unveiled.
Aquaman Makes a Terrible Mistake
The story begins as both the heroes and the vampires arrive simultaneously at Mister Miracle’s family location. Vampire-Aquaman has previously captured Scott Free and his daughter, whereas the heroes have found Big Barda. Aquaman, dispatched by Grodd to retrieve the child unharmed, chooses instead to drown her and Mister Miracle. Jayna, the sole remaining Wonder Twin, attempts to intervene but is halted when Mera appears and employs her water manipulation abilities to disrupt Jayna’s water creation, allowing Aquaman to drown Mister Miracle and the young girl.
The narrative starts with both heroes and vampires reaching Mister Miracle’s family at nearly the same moment. Vampire-Aquaman has already seized Scott Free and his daughter, while the heroes have discovered Big Barda. Aquaman, who was sent by Grodd to get the child alive, decides instead to drown them both, Mister Miracle included. Jayna, the last Wonder Twin, steps in to prevent him, but Mera intervenes and uses her water powers to halt Jayna’s water formation, enabling Aquaman to kill Mister Miracle and the little girl by drowning them.
After returning home, Green Arrow and Lois Lane engage in a heated discussion about his recent assault on Gotham City and the breach of the truce with the vampires. It’s Damian Wayne, the vampire, who hints that Alfred might have survived the attack. Meanwhile, a mysterious figure queries about Scott Free’s daughter, only to be told she’s deceased. As the undead horde led by Queen Gordon, Grodd, and Aquaman approaches the human fortress, this enigmatic individual is unveiled as Metron, foreshadowing future events. The vampire army disrupts a gathering of humans, setting the stage for a confrontation between the two factions. Supergirl initially attempts to persuade the vampires to honor the truce despite their questionable actions, but eventually draws a boundary in the snow, igniting a colossal battle.
Darkseid, the embodiment of evil. Darkseid admits he had sent Granny Goodness, someone the vampires didn’t recognize, to persuade the vampires into retrieving Barda and Scott Free’s daughter for him. Darkseid wanted his own granddaughter with him.
In a bold and sassy tone, Aquaman challenges Darkseid, saying that the vampires ignore his orders and it’s time for him to depart so they can annihilate the humans. The ocean ruler then confirms that he murdered the young girl, stripping Darkseid of his trophy. As expected, Darkseid reacts calmly, overpowers Aquaman, and brutally squashes him. With a violent burst of blood, bone, and internal organs, the Atlantean vampire perishes. In response, Darkseid orders his Boom Tubes activated, summoning hordes of Parademons to wreak havoc on both factions.
Darkseid’s Arrival Completely Changes the Conflict of DC vs. Vampires
In the series titled “DC vs Vampires“, things have largely remained grounded on Earth, but it was inevitable that Darkseid would insert himself into the ongoing battle. The death of his granddaughter has led him to deem Earth as unnecessary, drastically altering the narrative of “World War V“. Darkseid has an abundance of Parademons at his disposal, which he’s willing to deploy on both sides of the war, disregarding the survival of humans and vampires alike. The only viable solution for both parties to survive is by joining forces against the embodiment of evil, Darkseid, and even that may not be enough to ensure Earth survives this conflict.
The unexpected demise of Aquaman leaves us taken aback. Despite deserving Darkseid’s retribution for drowning a young girl, his death feels underwhelming given DC’s recent focus on Aquaman. However, it serves its purpose and deals a blow to the vampire forces, as they have lost one of their leaders. This weakening could prove significant in the impending struggle.
This series is on the verge of undergoing a significant transformation, which is exciting. Typically, such narratives revolve around humans managing to overcome hordes of monsters despite being fewer in number. However, incorporating the realm of Apokolips adds an unique twist to World War V, distinguishing it from series like DCeased. I’m curious to witness how Rosenberg and Schmidt will explore this novel aspect of the conflict.
