TikTok is set to shut down in the U.S. within this month unless there’s a sudden reversal from the U.S. government. For more than a year, the U.S. has been considering an outright ban on TikTok unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, transfers ownership to a new buyer. The bill that aims to restrict TikTok was passed by both the Senate and Congress last spring and was then approved by President Joe Biden. Since ByteDance has persistently refused to sell TikTok, it will have to prepare for the closure of the social media app in less than two weeks.
According to CBS News, TikTok officials announced they will close the widely used social media platform in the U.S. on January 19th. Although users can still access TikTok in other parts of the world, the U.S. is a major market for the app and its shutdown here would significantly impact its financial growth. Despite TikTok’s claim that such closure infringes upon freedom of speech protected by the First Amendment, judges have consistently dismissed these arguments in their rulings on the case.
TikTok’s U.S. operations may persist if the U.S. Supreme Court decides in favor of TikTok. In late December, the Supreme Court announced it would review a potential injunction against the law prohibiting TikTok. This case will be argued this coming Friday, and the court will then decide whether to intervene. Time is of the essence, as TikTok faces imminent closure in the U.S. if no action is taken.
As a devoted TikTok fan, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the app will continue to thrive in the U.S., and there’s reason to believe this might happen thanks to President-elect Donald Trump. In the aftermath of his victory in the 2024 Presidential election, he surprisingly changed his initial stance on TikTok by expressing his intention to oppose a ban. This shift was sparked by his appreciation for the app’s potential to connect with younger voters during his recent campaign. However, it’s important to note that Trump won’t officially become the U.S. President until January 20th, which could be too late to prevent TikTok from shutting down temporarily. If and when this happens, it remains uncertain whether the app might make a comeback at a later date.
