I can’t help but express my enthusiasm for the casting news regarding Edgar Wright’s reboot of “The Running Man.” As a fan, it feels like a dream come true to see Colman Domingo joining the cast, particularly as he seems tailor-made for his role. According to Deadline, Domingo will play the host of the show’s brutal reality game, a part that I believe he’ll bring to life spectacularly. The film, an adaptation of Stephen King’s 1982 novel published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, also features Glen Powell, Josh Brolin, Karl Glusman, Katy O’Brian, and Daniel Ezra. Slated for release in theaters on November 7th, I can hardly wait to witness this exciting ensemble bring the story to life!
The story “The Running Man” takes place in a future America that’s fallen into dystopia. A character named Ben Richards (Powell), struggling to pay for his daughter’s medical bills, signs up for a macabre TV show called “The Running Man.” In this game, ruthless teams chase down participants, and the longer they survive, the more money they earn. The original 1987 film adaptation starring Arnold Schwarzenegger was less faithful to Stephen King’s novel, with Richard Dawson, known for hosting “Family Feud,” portraying the malicious host of the show. However, the upcoming adaptation is expected to closely follow King’s book, with Brolin taking on the role of Dan Killian, the executive running the show.
As Deadline reports, Wright’s version of the film positions Brolin’s character as a more central antagonist. However, Domingo’s role as the television host in the reboot will also be significant. The creators of the movie were keen to find the right actor for this part. Domingo is recognized for his work on shows like Fear The Walking Dead, Euphoria, and Sing Sing. Lately, he has appeared in Netflix’s The Madness and will lend his voice to Norman Osborn in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, premiering on Disney+ on January 29th.
In terms of the movie, Wright is the one in charge of directing, having co-written the script with Michael Bacall. Previously, Wright has highlighted that this film will deviate from the 1987 version, stating that it will be more aligned with the book — without expressing any negative sentiments towards Schwarzenegger’s film.
Previously, Wright expressed that they enjoyed the movie but preferred the book even more, stating that the film didn’t accurately portray the book. As a teenager, when Wright first saw the Schwarzenegger film, they felt it was nothing like the book. Wright added that they believe no one has successfully adapted the book. When asked about The Running Man, Simon Kinberg inquired if Wright had any interest. Wright replied that they had often thought the book was in need of an adaptation. However, this doesn’t imply that adapting it would be simple!
The Running Man is set to open in theaters November 7th.
