Actor Rory McCann, best known for his role as The Hound in Game of Thrones, has been added to the cast list for season 2 of Ahsoka. According to The Insider (subsequently confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter), McCann will step into the shoes of Baylan Skoll, taking over from the late Ray Stevenson who passed away in May 2023. In the first season of Ahsoka, Baylan is a significant adversary, working alongside Morgan Elsbeth and the Nightsisters in their mission to locate Grand Admiral Thrawn.
According to The Hollywood Reporter’s report, no directors or filming dates for Season 2 of Ahsoka have been confirmed yet. Earlier reports suggested that filming for this Star Wars series might begin in April. It’s unclear if this timeline still holds, but given the recent casting announcement featuring McCann, it seems likely that the production team is preparing to start filming soon.
Following Stevenson’s demise, Dave Filoni, showrunner of Ahsoka and Lucasfilm’s creative chief, discussed Baylan Skoll’s future, revealing that the studio was then adopting a “wait-and-see approach.” In the first season, Baylan’s tale concluded ambiguously, as he separated from his apprentice Shin Hati to pursue his personal journey on Peridea. The finale presents him encountering statues of the gods from Mortis, potent Force-users who were previously featured in the animated series The Clone Wars.
Through the events of Season 1, Baylan emerged as one of Star Wars’ most intriguing figures. Following the devastation of the Jedi Order he was a part of during the Clone Wars, his goal is to halt the recurring struggle between light and dark that has marked galactic history. While specific details about Ahsoka Season 2 remain secret for now, McCann’s involvement suggests that the narrative will further explore Baylan’s mission. Additionally, as Season 1 concludes, characters such as Shin, Ahsoka, Sabine, and Huyang are found on Peridea. This opens up the possibility of a future encounter between Baylan and these individuals.
Lucasfilm might have chosen to explore Baylan’s storyline through a different format, but given his significance in Season 1, replacing him seemed more logical than abandoning his narrative thread for Season 2. His final scene in the finale sets up further developments; it appears that it was written with future appearances of Baylan in mind. Given the positive reception from viewers, there was demand to see more of this character on-screen. We can’t wait to see how Ahsoka Season 2 will delve into Baylan’s relationship with the Mortis Gods.
Absolutely, Stevenson’s portrayal significantly contributed to the appeal of Baylan for viewers. The actor skillfully created an intriguing character that was distinct from previous ones, which is a pity because fans won’t get to witness Stevenson expanding Baylan’s legacy further. McCann faces a challenging task as he takes on the role, but given his talent, he’s certain to do it justice. Everyone working on Ahsoka Season 2 is aware of the weight of recasting Baylan and will strive to get it right, balancing respect for Stevenson’s performance with charting a new course ahead.
