Your Sleeping Dogs Movie Is Sleeping with the Fishes

Among the outstanding open-world games for the PS3, Sleeping Dogs stood out as one of the best. Although a satisfactory remaster was released for the PS4, Square Enix never developed a sequel. Interestingly enough, United Front Games, the Canadian studio behind Sleeping Dogs and the ModNation Racers series, no longer operates today.

As a devoted fan, I had been clinging onto hope for the continuation of the series, with the announcement of an upcoming movie. But now, it seems my hopes have sunk to the bottom of a murky river, as lead actor Donnie Yen confided in Polygon that the adaptation has met its untimely end.

The actor from Rogue One stated that he had put in a significant amount of effort, including time and resources, collaborating closely with these producers. He also personally financed certain drafts and portions of the rights.

For a long time, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the moment to act. I’ve had these vivid images swirling in my mind, but sadly… well, you know how the film industry can be, don’t you? I’ve invested countless years into it, and it’s just turned out to be a disappointing situation.

“Well, on to better things.”

Initially scheduled for release in 2017, the movie was planned to feature Yen in the lead role as Wei Shen. At a certain stage, Indonesian filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto, renowned for his work in “The Night Comes for Us,” was contracted to direct the project.

It seems the film has ceased production, and it’s hard for us to envision a follow-up game. It’s unfortunate since there’s a scarcity of quality urban sandbox games apart from Grand Theft Auto.
