Michael Sheen has taken on a notable initiative aimed at enhancing the arts scene in Wales, after the shutdown of National Theatre Wales towards the end of 2020.
The performer, well recognized for his work in Good Omens, The Twilight Saga, and Staged, expressed deep disappointment upon learning that the theater group would close its doors due to a significant reduction in funding from Arts Council Wales.
His reaction led him to establish the Welsh National Theatre, an innovative venture dedicated to sharing grand narratives on expansive stages for vast crowds. This initiative centers Welsh tales, authors, and theater artists in each and every performance.
He shared with BBC News, “We aim for it to embody the vibrant heritage that has defined our nation throughout history. Our goal is not just to satisfy ourselves, but also to amaze the global audience.
If you approach it with passion and boldness, infused with creativity and fresh ideas, I believe it’s likely to capture the interest of others.
Initially, the actor plans to privately finance the Welsh National Theatre and also assume the role of its artistic leader. However, he clarified that he’s willing to accept financial support from both the public and private sectors, as well as collaborations with other organizations like Theatr Cymru.
Additionally, Sheen mentioned that the massive success of his latest play, Nye – a dramatic portrayal of NHS founder Aneurin Bevan written by Welsh playwright Tim Price – had inspired him.
As a film enthusiast, I’d say I too pointed out the recent resurgence of Gavin & Stacey as a testament to the craving for Welsh narratives. I praised it for its ability to resonate with our daily lives and for painting a picture that was not only positive but also hopeful – a combination that proved hard to resist for viewers nationwide across the UK.
Sheen pointed out that there are multiple ways to achieve this, such as by employing practical strategies and some of the greatest works of literature, but it’s not limited to that. In other words, you can also find alternative methods to reach your goal.
“I think that’s why I’m throwing everything at this. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work.”
