Microsoft has collaborated with various tech heavyweights to boost the creation of web browsers using Chromium as their base. Recently, The Linux Foundation introduced “Chromium-Based Browser Supporters,” an initiative that funds the open development of browsers based on Chromium and aims to improve projects within the Chromium ecosystem. This week, both The Linux Foundation and Microsoft announced this news via blog posts.
As reported by the Linux Foundation, backers of Chromium-based web browsers are creating a shared platform where open source developers can collaborate without bias. Existing Chromium initiatives will continue to operate as they are, but any new projects originating from Chromium browser supporters will fall under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation.
Microsoft has chosen to ally with Google, Meta, and Opera by backing Chromium-based web browsers. This week, these tech titans have shown a unified front in their decisions. Notably, Microsoft, Google, and Meta also made donations towards President Trump’s inauguration fund in recent times.
Six years ago, Microsoft declared that it would transition its Edge web browser to a Chromium platform. This new version of Edge was launched in July 2020. This change enhanced web compatibility within Edge and synchronized updates with widely-used browsers like Google Chrome. The shift to the Chromium platform also decreased the workload for developers regarding Edge’s compatibility, and it enabled Chrome extensions to function within Microsoft’s browser.
Last month, Microsoft unveiled a recap of Edge’s progress over the past year, showcasing various achievements for their browser. While Edge on Chromium initially faced some criticism, it appears that the strategy has proven fruitful.
- 10 billion AI-powered chats with Copilot
- 800 million articles, stories, and updates through MSN
- Over 1.4 billion phishing, malware, and scam attacks blocked
- Over 7.3 billion passwords protected each month
- Over 7 trillion megabytes of PC memory saved using Sleeping Tabs
- Over 1.8 trillion trackers prevented on Edge mobile
- 46 million messages and files shared through Drop
- 38 trillion characters translated
Despite being significantly behind Chrome and Safari regarding global market share, maintaining approximately 5%, it’s crucial to note that Edge remains a competitive browser that consistently undergoes development.
According to Meghan Perez, VP of Microsoft Edge, Microsoft is excited to be part of this endeavor that encourages cooperation within the Chromium environment. This venture fits well with our dedication to the web platform, as we strive to make valuable and beneficial contributions, engage in collaborative engineering, and foster partnerships with the community to ensure the best experience for everyone who uses the web.
