In the ever-growing landscape of fantasy television, shows like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and House of the Dragon have undeniably made their mark. Yet, the small screen has always been a haven for this genre. Even though fantasy has consistently proven its popularity over time, there are some exceptional fantasy TV series that might have slipped your memory. It’s surprising, given the ease of streaming platforms in helping us discover new shows, but certain titles have managed to elude some viewers. Here’s a list of five such series, worth revisiting or experiencing for the first time.
The Magicians
For five seasons spanning from 2015 to 2020, the TV series “The Magicians” graced the Syfy channel. Inspired by Lev Grossman’s trilogy, this show revolves around a band of students attending a unique academy where they learn magic. The story primarily focuses on Quentin Coldwater who discovers that the magical world from his cherished childhood books is indeed real, yet it also presents a grave threat to humanity.
Produced by Sera Gamble and featuring an ensemble cast including Stella Maeve, Hale Appleman, Arjun Gupta, Summer Bishil, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Jason Ralph, among others, “The Magicians” offers an enthralling narrative filled with captivating characters. With a 91% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 74% audience score, this show has garnered acclaim for its magical storytelling.
Unfortunately, “The Magicians” is no longer available on Netflix, but as of now, it remains without a new streaming platform.
Lost Girl
From 2010 to 2016, the captivating series Lost Girl unfolded over its five seasons, exploring a magical narrative. Anna Silk portrays Bo Dennis, a character with succubus powers who grew up in a human family. The story follows Bo as she seeks to uncover the origins of her extraordinary abilities. Kris Holden-Ried, Zoie Palmer, Rick Howland, Ksenia Solo, and K.C. Collins are among the talented cast members. With an 80% approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes viewers, Lost Girl is a risk worth taking. Fans can stream all seasons of this intriguing show on The CW.
Pushing Daisies
To remember the debut of “Pushing Daisies,” one needs to go as far back as 2007. This supernatural comedy aired its second and last season in two parts, first in 2008 and then in 2009. Despite having a relatively short run, “Pushing Daisies” was appreciated by viewers, with a 96% rating among Rotten Tomatoes critics and a 95% audience score. Lee Pace plays the role of Ned, a pastry chef who has the ability to bring the dead back to life. The show centers around Ned and his associates, which includes his once-deceased childhood crush, as they work together to solve various murder mysteries. Other notable cast members include Anna Friel, Chi McBride, Kristin Chenoweth, Ellen Greene, and Swoosie Kurtz. Both seasons of “Pushing Daisies” can be streamed on Max.
His Dark Materials
From 2019 to 2022, the television series “His Dark Materials,” produced by HBO and BBC, was aired. This series spanned across three seasons, each inspired by Philip Pullman’s trilogy of novels. The story is set in a world with multiple dimensions where human souls manifest as animal companions known as daemons. Jack Thorne wrote the television adaptation of this work.
The main character in “His Dark Materials” is Lyra Silvertongue, portrayed by Dafne Keen, an orphaned girl who goes on a quest to find her missing friend while uncovering astonishing truths about her universe. The rest of the series’ cast includes Kit Connor, Ruth Wilson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and James McAvoy. Critics rated this fantasy show at 84%, while audiences gave it an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the more successful fantasy shows in the past five years.

Bitten
As a film enthusiast, I’ve stumbled upon a hidden gem that seems to have flown under most radars – “Bitten”. If you’re a fan of werewolves, this Canadian series is worth checking out! It delves deep into the world of nocturnal supernatural creatures and is adapted from Kelley Armstrong’s “Women of the Otherworld” book series. The story revolves around Laura Vandervoort’s character, Elena Michaels, who happens to be the only living female werewolf. Over three seasons spanning from 2014 to 2016, Elena navigates the complexities of juggling her human and werewolf lives. Joining her on this journey are talented actors such as Greyston Holt, Greg Bryk, Steve Lund, Michael Xavier, Genelle Williams, Paul Greene, and Tommie-Amber Pirie. Although it lacks a Rotten Tomatoes score due to limited critical reviews, it has earned a 70% rating from audiences. Unfortunately, at the moment, “Bitten” isn’t available for streaming, but you can purchase or rent it through Prime Video, Apple TV, and YouTube TV.
