Shrek Fans Get Some Bad News About Upcoming Sequel (But It’s Good for Minions 3)

It turns out that Shrek 5, produced by Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation, won’t be released on July 1st, 2026, as initially planned. Instead, it’s been pushed back to December 23rd, 2026, which means it will now come out towards the end of the year. However, there’s a bright side: Illumination’s Minions 3 has been brought forward to an earlier date in the year.

Originally scheduled for release on June 30th, 2027, Minions 3 has been brought forward nearly a full year to July 2026 – the same date where Shrek 5 was initially planned to launch. This is fantastic news for fans of Minions (and that includes the author of this piece), making it an animation-packed year overall for DreamWorks in 2026.

According to the report, the reason for this decision was largely due to the massive success of the Minions at the box office. These characters are part of the highly profitable Despicable Me series, which has consistently performed well during Independence Day weekends in the past. The latest installment, Despicable Me 4, continued this trend by earning an impressive $230 Million worldwide during its opening weekend.

As a cinephile, I’m excited to share a bit of news that might pique your interest too. One movie from Illumination has shifted its release date from March 19th, 2027, to June 30th, 2027. Now, this isn’t a massive change, but it’s worth noting since we’re still in the dark about what this particular project entails. Here’s hoping for some juicy details to surface soon!

Excitedly, I share with you that news about Shrek 5 surfaced last year! It’s looking promising as our beloved characters – Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona, and Eddie Murphy as Donkey – are expected to return. Though not confirmed officially, there’s a strong possibility that Antonio Banderas will reprise his role as Puss in Boots, given the resounding success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Here’s hoping we get another adventure with our favorite ogre and friends!

Concerning the upcoming Minions movie, Brian Lynch (known for Minions and Big Helium Dog) is set to pen the script, while Pierre Coffin (famous for Despicable Me) will direct. The production duties are entrusted to Chris Meledandri and Bill Ryan. At present, there’s no word on the plot or which characters besides the Minions will make an appearance. Given that the last movie saw the Minions encountering a young Gru, it’s possible that the story might continue from where it left off.
