It’s somewhat surprising how close we are to celebrating the 25-year mark since the initial release of Shrek – if this realization leaves you feeling a bit older, here’s something to put a smile on your face instead.
Because production is underway for the fifth installment of the popular ogre and his donkey companion’s adventure series, the movie will hit theaters during the original’s significant anniversary year, which is 2026.
Originally planned as the final installment of the franchise, 2010’s Shrek: Forever After, turned out not to be the last we saw of Shrek on screen. Speculations about Mike Myers reprising his role began circulating shortly after its release.
2024 marked the announcement of an official continuation for the franchise, with the fifth movie slated for release. This upcoming film will serve as a sequel to the widely acclaimed spin-off, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the return of the original voice cast! Just like how we approached the Mario project, we’re focusing on preserving the cherished aspects that made everyone fall in love with these characters in the first place. Chris Meledandri, our creative partner at DreamWorks Animation, put it perfectly when he said: “The process isn’t too different from what we did with Mario. We identify the core elements that audiences have always loved and strive to honor them as best we can.
In my enthusiastic journey, I’m tirelessly crafting fresh plot elements and intriguing characters that transport me to entirely novel realms. The original cast plays an immense role in this creative adventure.
Speaking as a film enthusiast, I’m excitedly sharing that discussions about the cast reprising their roles have started brewing! The buzz we’re picking up suggests an overwhelming eagerness among the talented actors to step back onto the set with us once more.
Here’s a rundown of the challenges faced during the production of Shrek 5, along with an estimate for when we might get another glimpse of our favorite swamp-dwelling ogre.
Learn about the difficulties in making Shrek 5 and possible release dates for more Shrek fun!
Shrek 5 release date
The movie is set to hit the big screen on Wednesday, 23rd December 2026, which is a slight delay from the original release date that was previously announced, but only by a few months.
The confirmation of Shrek 5 came in July 2024, ending years of anticipation and months of speculation, initially set for a summer 2026 release. However, the release date has since been changed to its current scheduled date.
For nearly a decade and a half now, I’ve been patiently waiting for the next big installment in that beloved franchise, which last saw the silver screen back in 2010. After hints dropped by Dreamworks suggesting another film might be on the horizon, I was thrilled to learn in 2016 that development had begun for Shrek 5! The scriptwriting duties were entrusted to none other than Michael McCullers, renowned for his work on the hilarious Austin Powers series. Can’t wait to see what fresh adventures this talented writer has in store for our favorite ogre and friends!
Initially, Shrek 5 was scheduled to hit theaters in 2019, with the voice cast indicating that a script had been completed. However, since then, there has been no further news about it. Later, Eddie Murphy hinted at a potential release in 2020 during an interview with CinemaBlend, but that turned out to be a speculation as the year passed by without any new information.
The previous movies were released in 2001, 2004, 2007 and 2010 – so every three years.
Shrek 5 cast: Which characters will star?
In addition to setting a release date, it was also revealed that Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz will reprise their characters as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona respectively. It’s likely that we’ll hear about other cast members joining them in the near future.
Among those yet unconfirmed, there’s Antonio Banderas – the voice behind the famous character Puss in Boots. Since the finale of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish showed Puss revisiting some “old acquaintances” in Far Far Away, we anticipate it won’t be long before his return is officially announced.
Shrek 5 plot: What could happen?
Originally, producer Jeffrey Katzenberg revealed in 2004 after the launch of Shrek 2 that the Shrek franchise was intended as a five-part series. In Shrek 5, he explained, we will delve into how Shrek wound up in the swamp, offering insight into his backstory as we first encountered him in the initial movie.
Initially, there were plans for Shrek 5 to serve as a prequel, scheduled for release in 2013. However, during the creation of Shrek Forever After, it was determined that the fourth film provided an ideal conclusion to the beloved green ogre’s storyline.
In the years following, whispers of a fifth Shrek movie continued, but it wasn’t until 2016 when Comcast (NBC Universal’s parent company) bought DreamWorks Animation for $3.8 billion that real production on Shrek 5 began. NBC Universal’s CEO, Steve Burke, mentioned plans to rejuvenate the franchise and other DreamWorks films at the time, and by the end of that year, it was announced that the movie would be released in 2019.
Thus far, everything seems promising – Eddie Murphy himself affirmed that a script had been penned by Austin Powers scribe Michael McCullers as early as March 2017. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, McCullers hinted at a significant overhaul for the series, fueling speculation that Shrek 5 might not be a continuation but rather a reboot.
In 2018, Variety announced that Shrek 5 and Puss in Boots 2 were to be rebooted, featuring the original voice cast. Chris Meledandri, known for Despicable Me, would oversee the remakes.
He stated, “Our struggle has been to discover something authentic, not just another installment in a chain of sequels.
Although the pre-production was a success, there was no further news or communication – it seems that the release of Shrek 5 in 2019 did not happen as planned.
Following the hit release of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in 2022, there was a resurgence of whispers about upcoming projects. In 2023, Meledandri announced that production on Shrek 5 had commenced.
In June of 2024, Eddie Murphy also revealed plans for the movie, as well as a potential Donkey spin-off. He stated: “We’ve been working on [Shrek 5] for several months now. I recorded the initial act, and we’ll continue this year, with plans to wrap it up.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Shrek is making a comeback, and there’s exciting news about our beloved Donkey – he’s getting his own movie too! Yes, you heard it right. We’re not only working on a new Shrek film but also a standalone adventure for Donkey. Mark your calendars; both movies are expected to hit the screens in 2025. Can’t wait!
In July 2024, the official release date for the movie was formally confirmed. It was then disclosed that Walt Dohrn would be the director, while Meledandri and Brad Ableson would share the directing duties with him.
