Disregard the 38% Rotten Tomatoes rating; Wet Hot American Summer is a timeless classic – a cult favorite, to be precise. Similar to Jorma Taccone’s MacGruber and most of David Wain’s other works (The Ten, Role Models, Wanderlust, They Came Together, and A Futile and Stupid Gesture), it offers a type of humor that may not appeal to everyone, but for those who appreciate it, the connection is deep.
The storyline revolves around a team of counselors situated at a summer camp in the year 1981. As the final day arrives, parents are expected to collect their children, and the counselors continue with their usual activities – romancing and puffing on cigarettes. However, they have an unexpected visitor – a meteor hurtling towards them. To add to the strangeness, there’s a can of mixed vegetables that miraculously speaks, with the voice provided by H. Jon Benjamin, who has lent his voice to both Archer and Bob’s Burgers.
What a Cast
Similar to watching “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” and “MacGruber,” experiencing “Wet Hot American Summer” for the first time is best done with a group, especially if you’re around college age. As for the film itself, it seems to gain more charm as it ages, and its cast becomes even more noticeable over time.
2001 marked a time when the star-studded lineup included Molly Shannon, who had just finished her six-year stint on Saturday Night Live, David Hyde Pierce, near the end of his 11-year tenure on Frasier, Christopher Meloni juggling roles in both Law & Order: SVU and Oz, Janeane Garofalo known for Reality Bites and The Truth About Cats & Dogs, and Paul Rudd who had a few credits like Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, Romeo + Juliet, and The Cider House Rules. Although Paul Rudd was somewhat recognized at the time, he hadn’t yet reached A-list status. That happened three years later, starting with his role in 2004’s Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, followed by The 40-Year-Old Virgin the next year when he transitioned to comedy.
However, Rudd wasn’t the only rising star in the crowd. For example, Amy Poehler was in her inaugural year on SNL, teetering on the brink of stardom, and Elizabeth Banks was a year away from Spider-Man. As for Bradley Cooper, this was his debut film, and it took another eight years for him to ascend to A-list status with The Hangover.
Completing the lineup were some beloved characters from the comedy world. These included Michael Showalter, Ken Marino, Zak Orth, A.D. Miles, and Michael Ian Black – all favorites of Wain. Additionally, Judah Friedlander from 30 Rock and Joe Lo Truglio, a standout in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, were also part of the ensemble.
Behind-the-Scenes Stories & Netflix Continuations
The charm of Wet Hot American Summer, beyond the excitement of watching stars early in their careers, lies in the contagious enthusiasm they all exude. This explains why their on-screen chemistry seems so genuine, as Brad Rudd explained to Entertainment Weekly, because they truly “lived at the camp…It felt like summer camp where everyone mixed with everyone. It was the only project I’ve ever worked on where people would just show up to watch scenes being filmed, not just to support, but because it was a lot of fun…And when someone wasn’t working, they would go into town and bring back all the beer for that night.
It’s quite fitting that, even after everyone had moved on from their past, there was an overwhelming desire to reunite. This happened 14 years later with the Netflix prequel miniseries titled “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp,” which boasts a fantastic 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Just as hilarious, if not more so, than the original film, “First Day of Camp” benefits from a cast that has matured over time, the amusing concept of people significantly older playing slightly younger versions of their original characters, and big-name additions such as John Slattery, Chris Pine, Jon Hamm, Jason Schwartzman, Michael Cera, and Kristen Wiig. Although the 2017 sequel series, “Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later,” may be a bit of a disappointment, it serves to illustrate the strong bond this group shared and the enduring charm of the original “Wet Hot American Summer.
