One of the most iconic anime series is making a comeback on Adult Swim’s Toonami programming block, after more than two decades! Over the past few years, Toonami and Adult Swim have undergone several changes, with Adult Swim adjusting its schedule within Cartoon Network. As a result, the evening slot has been expanded, leading to the launch of the exciting Toonami Rewind project that brought back some classic shows from the past for viewers’ enjoyment. However, this unique experiment was discontinued at the beginning of this year.
Despite Toonami Rewind coming to an end, Adult Swim has revealed on Toonami’s official Facebook page that starting January 25th at 3:00AM EST, “Sailor Moon” will be added to the regular Toonami schedule. This series was previously part of Toonami Rewind, but this is the first time it will appear in the official Toonami lineup since it last aired with the block in 2001. This means that fans have waited almost 25 years to see it officially on Toonami again.
Sailor Moon Joins Toonami Schedule
Starting this coming Saturday, January 25th, the revised Toonami schedule on Adult Swim will look something like this (all times in Eastern Standard Time):
1. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero – 9:00 PM
2. My Hero Academia – 9:30 PM
3. Attack on Titan – 10:00 PM
4. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Train Arc – 10:30 PM
5. One Punch Man – 11:00 PM
6. Boruto: Naruto Next Generations – 11:30 PM
- 12:00AM – Mashle: Magic and Muscles
- 12:30AM – Invincible Fight Girl
- 1:00AM – Blue Exorcist
- 1:30AM – One Piece
- 2:00AM – Dragon Ball Z Kai
- 2:30AM – Naruto
- 3:00AM – Sailor Moon
Last year, Dragon Ball Z Kai, Naruto, and Sailor Moon were introduced during the Toonami Rewind block, which spotlighted beloved shows from Toonami’s early 2000s era. This aligned with the Checkered Past block, featuring iconic Cartoon Network series from the same decade. However, due to modifications in Adult Swim’s schedule, Toonami Rewind had to cease operations.
Although it seems like all hope may have been lost, fear not! The beloved “Sailor Moon” is finally making its way onto the official Toonami schedule. If the version airing here is identical to the one previously shown on Toonami Rewind, then this will be the original, uncensored version of the series, officially translated by Viz Media for English viewers. Even if you missed out on episodes during Toonami Rewind, there’s a fantastic opportunity to dive into this revamped version of the series that some longtime fans might not have seen before.
What’s New for Toonami in 2025?
Toonami is set to undergo its first change in the upcoming year. Adult Swim is planning to introduce some highly anticipated anime releases to the block later in 2022, including “Lazarus,” a new original production from the creator of “Cowboy Bebop” and “Carole & Tuesday,” Shinichiro Watanabe. The release date for this upcoming series has not been confirmed at the time of writing, but it’s shaping up to be one of the most intriguing new anime projects coming out in 2022 overall.
Together with Watanabe, Lazarus will collaborate with Chad Stahelski, known for his work on John Wick, in creating action sequences. Sola Entertainment will also produce this project, suggesting that it promises to be visually stunning, much like the previews and promotional materials have indicated so far. However, there may still be other exciting projects or anime licenses yet to be revealed as the year progresses. Therefore, this year looks set to be significant for the anime block, with fans eagerly anticipating what’s coming next.
