During its initial season, the series Creature Commandos constructed the base elements of James Gunn’s and Peter Safran’s DC Universe through its tale about an offbeat band of monsters. Although the story has primarily centered around Task Force M’s mission in Pokolistan, each episode has subtly incorporated hints to other characters, locations, and occurrences that enrich the wider cinematic universe, emphasizing that metahumans and superheroes are a regular feature of this world. In line with this pattern, Episode 7 of Creature Commandos introduces some surprising references, further expanding upon the elements previously presented.
Star City, Bludhaven, and Metropolis
In Episode 7 of the series ‘Creature Commandos’, we delve into flashback sequences set in the city where Nina (portrayed by Zoë Chao) was born – Star City, a place well-known enough to be mentioned in newspapers and TV broadcasts within the episode. This name might sound familiar because Star City is famously linked with Green Arrow, an iconic character who gained massive popularity through The CW’s ‘Arrow’, a show that kickstarted a hugely successful live-action DC heroes universe on television.
In Episode 7, Star City isn’t the only significant DC location that appears. A news report reveals that when Nina was found in Star City, animal experts from Metropolis and Bludhaven were involved in tracking and capturing her. Metropolis is where Superman resides, a city we’ll soon see more of in the upcoming Superman. Bludhaven, on the other hand, is Nightwing’s base of operations, also known as Dick Grayson, the original Robin. Given that The Brave and the Bold is planning to introduce Damian Wayne as the new Robin, it seems likely that Dick Grayson has already left his Bat-nest and is operating in Bludhaven, making the Creature Commandos even more intriguing.
Marvel Comics Exists in the DCU
In the scene where Team M storms into Princess Ilana’s castle, The Bride playfully teases Dr. Phosphorus by calling him “Ghost Rider.” This reference is a wink to the flaming-skull superhero from Marvel Comics. This implies that the universe of Marvel Comics exists within DCU, upholding a longstanding practice among these two major comic publishers of acknowledging each other. For example, in Iron Man 3, Marvel’s cinematic universe made a nod to the DC animated series Super Friends, while in Eternals, Ikaris was mistaken for Superman. It’s delightful that Gunn is maintaining this tradition, suggesting that the rivalry between Marvel and DC is more about fans than the corporations themselves.
How Long Has Batman Been Active?
The standout revelation in Episode 7 of Creature Commandos is that DC Universe’s Batman might be older than we initially thought. In this episode, Dr. Phosphorus reveals he hasn’t experienced physical intimacy for fifteen years following his transformation into a radioactive skeleton, as disclosed in Episode 6. This implies that Dr. Phosphorus’ crimes span over a decade, suggesting Batman has been active for at least that long. This timeline is surprising but it could account for the existence of Batman’s family in the DCU.
All Hail the King (Shark)!
In the final moments of Episode 7, Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis) hands over control of all future Task Force M missions to The Bride as a recognition for her actions in eliminating Princess Ilana and averting World War III. During this scene, The Bride meets her new team members. Dr. Phosphorus and Weasel (voiced by Sean Gunn), continue their active roles, while GI Robot (also voiced by Sean Gunn) has been rebuilt in a massive metal form. Since GI doesn’t acknowledge The Bride, it seems that he lacks memory preservation, making his demise in Episode 3 all the more impactful.
In the latest group of additions, we find Nosferata and Khalis, two members of Creature Commandos who made appearances in Episode 4. Joining this crew is King Shark, a notable member from Task Force X in the 2021 film “The Suicide Squad”. The Creature Commandos have confirmed that Project Starfish and the Corto Maltese mission took place within the DC Universe, making “The Suicide Squad” at least partially consistent with established lore. King Shark’s inclusion serves as further proof that James Gunn’s first DC film largely fits into the new continuity.
All episodes of Creature Commandos are currently available for streaming on MAX.
