Severance Star Adam Scott “Not Sure” If He Wants Another Comic Book Role After Madame Web

It’s uncertain if Adam Scott, known for his role in “Severance,” will be part of another superhero film. He portrayed Ben Parker, Mary Parker’s (Emma Roberts) brother-in-law and the future Uncle Ben in Spider-Man, in the 2024 release “Madame Web” alongside Dakota Johnson. The movie, produced by Sony, received negative feedback from both critics and audiences, earning only $100 million globally at the box office. Given his previous role as Uncle Ben in a Spider-Man spinoff and his portrayal of Batman on “Parks and Recreation,” it remains to be seen if Scott would consider another comic book movie.

In a chat with ComicBook for the release of season 2 of my popular Apple TV+ show, Severance, I shared this: “I’m not entirely sure, but I’ve never ruled out anything. I’m a fan, and I enjoy watching those types of films, so who knows what might happen?

In discussions about Madame Web, Scott openly admitted that he used to be an avid comic book enthusiast. As a youngster, he frequently purchased comics from the Atlantis Fantasyworld comic book store located in California.

As a child, I was deeply passionate about comics. In fact, I spent my childhood in Santa Cruz, California, where they filmed ‘The Lost Boys.’ The comic book store featured in the 1987 movie ‘The Lost Boys’ was actually the one I frequented daily to buy all my new comic books,” Scott shared on The Jess Cagle Show. “My neighbor, Joe Ferrara, owned that store, so I would visit it almost every day and he would always have the comics that I was keen on.

Despite the movie directed by S.J. Clarkson hinting at a sequel involving Johnson’s character Cassandra Webb training the Spider-Women, this prospective future was never realized due to the film’s disappointing performance. The underperformance of both Venom: The Last Dance and Kraven the Hunter, combined with one of the poorest openings for a Marvel comic book adaptation, allegedly dampened the studio’s ambitions for a Spider-Man Universe franchise. This shift comes as Palak Patel, Sony’s Executive Vice President of Production and Development who oversaw the Spider-Man Universe, recently left the studio after ten years, along with Sony Pictures Chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra.

He explained to The Los Angeles Times before leaving Sony Pictures after seven years that “Madame Web” struggled in cinemas due to harsh criticism from the media. However, he believed the movie wasn’t poor and performed well on Netflix. Strangely, the press didn’t seem to favor the production of “Kraven” and “Madame Web,” leading critics to tear them apart. They also did this with “Venom,” but the audience adored “Venom” and made it a huge success.

Vinciquerra also noted, “These movies aren’t awful, mind you. They simply received harsh criticism from the media, which seems mysterious.

Severance season 2 premieres Jan. 17 on Apple TV+.
