Among several aspects where the Steam Deck stands out compared to its Windows counterparts like the ROG Ally, one significant advantage is the more flexible nature of SteamOS. While it isn’t as open as most Linux distributions, it does offer a greater degree of freedom for customization and tweaking than what you can do with Windows 11.
After meeting Decky Loader on the Steam Deck, I’ve been experimenting with various customization options. Recently, I came across a straightforward modification that has me grinning ear to ear.
Instead, I merely replaced the default Valve system sounds with a familiar alternative from the past – the classic Xbox console sounds.
How to install and start using Decky Loader on your Steam Deck
For frequent Steam Deck users, it’s highly recommended to consider Decky Loader as an addition. Essentially, it serves as a small marketplace for user-created plugins, offering extra functionality that Valve hasn’t integrated yet.
If you’re struggling to install Decky Loader on your Steam Deck, we’ve got a comprehensive guide for you! It’s generally quite straightforward, but having a keyboard and mouse handy will make the process smoother, as it needs to be done from desktop mode. Essentially, it involves downloading a file and completing the installation process.
After everything is set up on your Steam Deck, click the button labeled as ‘three dots’ or QAM button, and you’ll find the new icon for Decky Loader at the bottom of your screen.
How to add Xbox system sounds to the Steam Deck
Want to use Xbox sound effects instead of the default Valve system sounds? You’ll need the Audio Loader plug-in for that!
To set it up, follow the instructions given earlier to launch Decky Loader, then locate the small icon that resembles a store. Tapping on this icon will open the Decky Loader marketplace. Next, search for or navigate down the list until you find the Audio Loader plugin, then press the ‘Install’ button.
After that, return to the Decky Loader within your QAM Menu and select the freshly added Audio Loader feature. If it’s not visible immediately, restart your Steam Deck. I’ve found myself needing to reboot the Decky Loader plugins a few times.
Initially, there will be no options available other than the default one. To access the Audio Loader catalog where additional items can be installed, navigate to the Settings section and click on “Manage Packs” button. I opted for the Xbox One Sound Pack, so just search for that and you’re set. Additionally, there are packs designed for Xbox 360 and even the original Xbox if you’d like a dose of nostalgia.
From the drop-down menu, which was set to only one option before, you can now toggle on the setting. This simple action allows the plugin to handle the changes, resulting in your Steam Deck having an audio experience identical to a contemporary Xbox. What’s not to like about that?!
