The excitement for “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” has already built up significantly, starting with San Diego Comic-Con in 2024, when Kevin Feige confirmed the comeback of Marvel stars Robert Downey Jr. and directors the Russo brothers, and further intensified with the announcement that Chris Evans will rejoin the MCU. These upcoming films appear to center around Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom and seem to be following the plotlines from the “Secret Wars” comics, which are a series of highly-acclaimed Marvel event comic books.
Marvel seems to have stumbled in their Multiverse narrative, but these upcoming films might just be their chance to regain their former glory. Although the Marvel Cinematic Universe has drifted increasingly far from its comic book origins, there are numerous aspects from the Secret Wars comics that could significantly enhance these movies. The Secret Wars stories possess certain elements that have made them endearing, and it would be advantageous for Marvel Studios to incorporate the most effective ones.
Battleworld
In both the 1984 version of “Secret Wars” and its 2015 rendition, a realm known as Battleworld was featured. The original Battleworld emerged from the creative powers of the Beyonder, who combined various planets to provide arenas for battles between heroes and villains, hence its name, due to the promise of a grand prize at stake. Conversely, the later Battleworld was pieced together using fragments of the Multiverse that were salvaged by Doom, Doctor Strange, and the Molecule Man following the Incursions’ devastation of the Multiverse.
Incorporating Battleworld into the lore of the “Secret Wars” is essential, regardless of where the narrative goes, be it closer to the 1984 or 2015 version of “Secret Wars.” Battleworld must always be present in some form. The original offers a blend of advanced alien bases, diverse flora and fauna, and various geographical landscapes, while the latter showcases fragments from the most fascinating worlds within the Marvel Multiverse. Given that the Incursions have been hinted at in the MCU, it’s likely that the movie adaptations will feature Battleworld, offering fans of the MCU a chance to explore this unique realm.
The Beyonder/Beyonders
In essence, the “Secret Wars” comics series wouldn’t have existed without the involvement of the Beyonder and his civilization. The original “Secret Wars” storyline featured this enigmatic character, known as One from Beyond, who orchestrated a battle between Earth’s heroes and villains to assess their capabilities. As the narrative unfolded in “Secret Wars II”, the Beyonder transformed into a human, experiencing life on Earth and further developing his character. Throughout the Marvel Universe’s history, the Beyonder has made occasional appearances, causing chaos before mysteriously vanishing once more.
During Jonathan Hickman’s tenure on the Avengers and New Avengers series, readers were introduced to the Beyonders – a powerful extradimensional race who created the Celestials and govern the Multiverse. The Beyonders initiated the Incursions as an experiment, which could make a Secret Wars story incomplete without them. Given the ongoing Incursions, it’s likely we will see the Beyonders again soon, and that’s exciting news.
Molecule Man
In 1960, the character known as Molecule Man made his debut in issue #20 of Fantastic Four. Over the years, a man named Owen Reece gained control over molecules and frequently clashed with the Fantastic Four. He was among the villains recruited by the Beyonder, playing a significant role in the events of Secret Wars and later, Secret Wars II. His god-like abilities had negative side effects that drove him insane, and it was discovered that these powers originated from the universe of the Beyonders, tying him to them. In 2015’s Secret Wars, Molecule Man was used by Doom to manipulate the powers of the Beyonders, a secret kept hidden from the rest of Battleworld by both Doom and Doctor Strange.
Molecule Man plays a significant role in the “Secret Wars” comic book tales. His link with the Beyonders and the Multiverse is distinctive within the Marvel Universe, as it’s shown that he can coexist on a multiversal scale, being present in every universe. He is more of a complex antagonist than a typical one, as he has unknowingly tapped into something powerful. The MCU could benefit from introducing more nuanced villains, and the potential “Doomsday/Secret Wars” storyline could greatly benefit from Molecule Man’s character.
God Emperor Doom
The revelation that Robert Downey Jr. would portray Doctor Doom took many by surprise, as it aligns perfectly with the narrative arcs found in the Secret Wars comic series. Throughout both the initial and concluding versions of Secret Wars, Doctor Doom assumes a pivotal role. In the 1984 edition, he essentially heads the villains and ultimately manages to seize the power of the Beyonder, transforming into a deity and serving as the primary antagonist of the story. In contrast, in the 2015 Secret Wars, Doctor Doom emerges as the Multiverse’s savior and the ruler of Battleworld, reigning as God Emperor Doom.
In the comic book series “Secret Wars,” Doom achieved godhood on two occasions, and it’s expected that he will do so in the upcoming movies as well. However, it remains unclear whether Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doom is the genuine character or a multiverse Iron Man impersonating Doom to confront the real Doom. Regardless of the specifics, the character of God Emperor Doom is crucial for the storyline of “Secret Wars” and should be included in the films.
Superpowered Warfare
It might appear obvious, considering its title, but the essence of Secret Wars has always been about wars between powerful entities. The 1984 edition portrays a struggle between two factions vying for supremacy, while the 2015 iteration kickstarts with the collision of the 616 and 1610 Marvel Universes, battling for their existence on a Battleworld maintained by a delicate truce. However, this peace is disrupted when survivors from Earths-616 and 1610 stir up conflict among the factions, leading them to rise against Doom. Wars are integral to these narratives, and it’s crucial for the movies to recognize that.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) demonstrates their knack for creating spectacular superhero war sequences, as evident in the epic battles of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame”. It stands to reason that incorporating such action-packed scenes would be a cinch in the upcoming films. To elevate the storyline, a multi-universal conflict orchestrated by the Beyonders, Doctor Doom, or even both entities, should serve as the central theme for these movies. Marvel Studios needs to up their game with these films, and engaging in superpowered wars is the path they need to traverse to achieve that goal.
