Rory Callum Sykes’ mom is detailing his final moments.
Following the tragic demise of the former child actor from the British TV show “Kiddy Kapers”, who was just 32 years old and lost his life in the Los Angeles wildfires, his mother, Shelley Sykes, spoke about her valiant effort to rescue him.
In a conversation with ABC News Australia, she clarified, “I saw some light particles and ash accumulating on my son’s cottage rooftop. I attempted to extinguish any potential flames with the garden hose, but there was no water inside it, which caused me quite a scare.
She shared that it was challenging for her to get her son, who is both blind and has cerebral palsy, to leave his house – one of three small homes on their 17-acre Malibu property besides the main residence – during the evacuation, due to his mobility issues.
According to Shelley, Rory had shut the door and refused to come out since his feet were swollen and he urgently required the restroom. She added that he told her, “Mom, please step aside; I’ll manage here – I’m fine.
Later on, I ventured to seek assistance in quelling the blaze, yet found none with water at hand to douse the inferno.
She remembered saying, “Could you please act, either he should leave his cottage or the fire should be extinguished,” and they returned within an hour.
By that time, it was too late.
Shelley continued, expressing her despair as she was summoned to identify her son. She feared he might have been removed from their cottage and met with some unfortunate incident. Her heart raced frantically, but the shock that hit her upon arrival was indescribable. The three fireproof cottages, adhering to all building codes, were reduced to nothing but black ash within an hour. There was nothing left.
She mentioned about her son, “He lived a wonderful life, right where he wished to be, yet it was tragic. I believe he wouldn’t have passed away if we had access to water.
After her son’s death, Shelley also shared a statement.
