The filmmakers behind the Avengers movies are reuniting once more. Five years after Anthony and Joe Russo wrapped up a chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with “Avengers: Endgame” (2019), Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige has revealed that the Russo brothers will direct the final installments of the Multiverse Saga – “Avengers: Doomsday” scheduled for May 1, 2026 and “Avengers: Secret Wars” on May 7, 2027. Besides re-uniting with screenwriter Stephen McFeely, who previously collaborated with the Russos on “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, “Captain America: Civil War”, and both parts of “Avengers” (Infinity War and Endgame), it’s also reported that former Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. will be back in action as Doctor Doom.
In “Endgame,” the original team of Earth’s strongest heroes – Tony Stark (Downey), Steve Rogers (Evans), Thor (Hemsworth), Natasha Romanoff (Johansson), Clint Barton (Renner), and Bruce Banner (Ruffalo as the Hulk) – reached their concluding adventure. Interestingly, it was also expected to be the last Marvel Cinematic Universe film for the quartet of directors who had worked together four times.
After wrapping up “Endgame”, Anthony Russo shared in an interview with Empire Magazine (for their new Netflix film “The Electric State”), it took some time for us to view it as something other than an ending. He mentioned that we’ve maintained a strong bond with Kevin Feige, Lou D’Esposito, and the entire Marvel Studios team, and over the years, we’ve discussed numerous ideas together.
During interviews for movies outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), such as “The Gray Man” and “Cherry,” in 2022, the Russos hinted at a possible return by saying “never say never.” A recurring concept that came up was the possibility of them directing another massive Avengers-style project. One title that frequently emerged was “Secret Wars.
To put it simply, Anthony said that by chance, we discovered an idea which sparked everyone’s interest. It wasn’t something we expected until it appeared, but when it did, we felt compelled to share it as a fascinating tale.
Joe mentioned, “We’d been considering other concepts before this one, but we never managed to find a suitable narrative for them. However, it wasn’t until McFeely came up with a way to tailor Secret Wars for the MCU that anything felt fitting.” The Russos didn’t specify which projects they might have been referring to earlier.
2015’s “Secret Wars,” an epic saga featuring characters from various dimensions, was envisioned by comic book author Jonathan Hickman as a cosmic-scale event that would surpass the 1984 superhero crossover known as “Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars” in magnitude.
Joe Russo recalled saying to Steve McFeely, “Hey, here’s a wild thought. What if we revisit Secret Wars?” McFeely responded, “No way, not at all.” The next morning at 7:30, McFeely called back and said, “Alright, I’ve got an idea.
It appears that the story revolves around Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom. The Academy Award-winning actor from Oppenheimer is stepping out of retirement to take on the role of Marvel’s most formidable villain, a nemesis of the Fantastic Four who was the main character in 2015’s Secret Wars. Feige introduced the Russo brothers during last year’s San Diego Comic-Con to announce this news, revealing that Avengers 5, previously known as The Kang Dynasty and focused on Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror, has been renamed Doomsday. Downey will be the one under the mask of Doctor Doom in this film.
Anthony Russo, speaking at the packed Hall H with a seating capacity of 6,500, exclaimed that the four-movie series was astounding and left everyone drained creatively, emotionally spent on the floor. Since then, he and Joe have developed a unique tale that may offer a path forward for us all, they hinted.
Details regarding the plot are being kept secret in Battleworld. However, Marvel officially announced that this summer’s “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” starring Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Susan Richards/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/the Thing, will contribute to “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars.” This upcoming adventure for Marvel’s first family is rumored to involve Earth’s mightiest heroes, including Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in a crossover event.
Aside from Robert Downey Jr., it’s been shared that some of the cast members are Chris Evans portraying Steve Rogers, Hayley Atwell bringing Peggy Carter to life, and Benedict Cumberbatch embodying Doctor Strange. And just like Doctor Strange would say, we’re truly standing at the precipice of an epic finale.
Marvel’s “Avengers: Doomsday” is set to debut on May 1, 2026, and then “Avengers: Secret Wars” will follow on May 7, 2027, marking the conclusion of The Multiverse Saga.
