If you’re not familiar with Adam Elliot, watching the trailer for ‘Memoir of a Snail‘ is a fantastic introduction to his unique form of stop-motion animation, which he creates entirely by himself.
In simpler terms, Grace Pudel is a solitary individual with a peculiar fondness for decorative snails and an ardent passion for books. At a tender age, when she gets separated from her brother Gilbert who possesses the ability to breathe fire, Grace plunges into a cycle of apprehension and turmoil. Despite being subjected to numerous trials, she finds motivation and optimism in forming a lasting bond with Pinky, an old woman brimming with resilience and zest for life.
Memoir of a Snail, which recently won both the ‘Cristal’ Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and the Best Film Prize at the BFI London Film Festival (marking the first time an animated feature has ever claimed the top prize), has also been nominated for a Golden Globe and is currently short-listed for Animated Feature of The Year at the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards, as well as long-listed for the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards. This heartfelt story follows a solitary woman named Grace Pudel as she shares her life experiences with a simple garden snail named Sylvia.
In this animation, I’m privileged to lend my voice to a character named Grace, portrayed exceptionally by Sarah Snook, who you might recognize from “Succession.” Joining me is my estranged twin brother Gilbert, skillfully voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee. This is another profound and emotive “clayography” from one of the world’s revered animation masters – it’s part seven of Elliot’s Trilogy of Trilogies. The talented voice cast also includes Eric Bana, Nick Cave, Dominique Pinon, and Jacki Weaver. Similar to previous works I’ve been a part of, this film is deeply rooted in the artist’s family and friends, delving into complex themes that are often heavy but balanced with instances of humor and warmth, much like life itself.
It’s been a pleasure to witness such an exceptional film, one that we anticipate will make it onto our top films of 2025.
