Suzanne Collins is set to publish another Hunger Games prequel book series in March, with a movie adaptation scheduled for 2026. There are numerous possibilities for more projects like this in the future. The new book, titled Sunrise on the Reaping, will delve into the teenage years of Haymitch Abernathy during the 50th Hunger Games. This follows the Coriolanus Snow prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which was released as a book in 2020 and as a film directed by Francis Lawrence in 2023. Readers of the Hunger Games books and movies are eager for more insights into various characters’ pasts, both on paper and on screen. If Collins writes additional prequels, these five characters could provide compelling material for future stories.
Finnick Odair
The beloved character Finnick Odair from the Hunger Games series was brought to life by Sam Claflin in both Catching Fire (2013) and parts 1 and 2 of Mockingjay. Hailing from District 4, Finnick braved the Third Quarter Quell and subsequently joined the resistance in District 13 against the Capitol. A potential prequel could delve into Finnick’s past, recounting his triumph in the 65th Hunger Games at just 14 years old. Additionally, the relationship between Finnick and Annie Cresta, which was hinted at only briefly in the books and films, offers ample room for expansion in future projects.
Johanna Mason
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about District 7’s Johanna Mason who triumphed in the 71st Games, much like Finnick did. Just as Jena Malone’s character was taken by the Capitol at the end of book two, Johanna found herself emaciated and injured due to brutal torture before her rescue. During the narrative of Mockingjay, she resided in District 13.
Unfortunately, a significant portion of her storyline, which included her recovery and training with Katniss, was unfortunately left out in the movies. A prequel focusing on Johanna’s initial participation in the Hunger Games could help bridge that gap and offer more insight into this captivating character.
President Coin
In the “Mockingjay” book and films, Alma Coin from District 13 stands out as an intriguing contrast to President Snow. While Julianne Moore’s character ultimately overthrew Snow and the Capitol’s army, she was tragically killed by Katniss Everdeen with a deadly arrow, ending her rule. It seems likely that a future story focusing on Coin’s journey to power in District 13 would be a natural progression following a prequel centered around President Snow. There are many untold stories about how Coin came to power in District 13.
Cinna
In the adored Hunger Games franchise, Cinna stands out as one of the most influential characters, with his demise being particularly heart-wrenching for fans. Famously portrayed by Lenny Kravitz on screen, Cinna functioned as Katniss’ stylist in the 74th and 75th Games. His ability to highlight District 12’s spirit and infuse his own rebellious style endeared him to many. The iconic garment he crafted for Katniss, the flaming attire, earned her the moniker “girl on fire,” while his tragic death in Catching Fire fueled Katniss’ growing hatred of the Capitol. A prequel focusing on Cinna’s life before meeting Katniss could shift the Hunger Games narrative, shedding light on the fashion industry and the inner workings of the competition. Additionally, exploring what led Cinna to defy the Capitol, given his upbringing within its confines, would provide captivating insights into his character.
Lucy Gray Baird
In another intriguing scenario for a potential prequel to the Hunger Games trilogy, Lucy Gray Baird could be the next contender. Known for her bravery and musical prowess, portrayed by Rachel Zegler on screen, Lucy Gray won the 10th annual Hunger Games but mysteriously vanished from District 12 shortly after. Despite being a significant character in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Lucy Gray wasn’t the novel’s main perspective character. This leaves room for a sequel to the original title that would still serve as a prequel to the Hunger Games trilogy. Given that Lucy Gray’s fate was intentionally left uncertain, unveiling what happened to her after escaping District 12 could provide an engaging storyline, especially if she managed to find District 13. Additionally, Zegler’s exceptional performance in the role makes it a missed opportunity not to reintroduce her character to the franchise in some way.
The Hunger Games movies are streaming on Hulu and air on TNT and TBS.
