Everything Creature Commandos Taught Us About the New DCU

The television series “Creature Commandos has offered DC Comics enthusiasts their initial glimpse into the DC Universe, a sneak peek that left many wondering about the decision to introduce such an unconventional concept. However, the ensemble of monstrous characters in this show has proven to be an intriguing gateway into the fresh cinematic universe built around DC Comics. The series was filled with hints about the direction of the new DC Universe, revealing numerous familiar elements. With the first season now concluded, it’s time to examine everything the show has laid out and anticipate what the future might hold for DC fans. All signs suggest an exciting journey ahead for them.

The DCU Already Has Films In Its Canon

To kick things off, let’s discuss the foundational aspects first. The presence of Task Force M signifies that a significant portion of James Gunn’s earlier DC works is valid within the DC Universe. In other words, events like The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, even the storyline about Superman being shot, are considered part of the universe’s history. Given that Gunn oversees these projects, it’s logical for them to be recognized as canon.

Characters such as John Economos and Amanda Waller are one and the same, and the incident where Peacemaker killed Rick Flag Jr. is a fact acknowledged by both Waller and Rick Flag Sr. While Flag may not be fully aware of all the details, that’s simply how Waller operates.

Amazons Are A Controversial World Discovery

As the season unfolded, the series delved deeper into the DC Universe, particularly focusing on Circe and the Sons of Themyscira during its initial stages. It was revealed that Themyscira is not only recognized globally but also faces significant controversy among certain online communities. Academic courses even exist to study it, as demonstrated by Professor McPherson, who Clayface deceitfully imitated in an effort to deceive the Creature Commandos into returning and assassinating Princess Illana Rostovic in Pokolistan. Notably, the knights of Pokolistan bear a resemblance to the Atomic Knights, survivors from a nuclear apocalypse on either a future or alternate Earth, depending on the specific DC Universe continuity. This aligns with Grodd’s global aspirations – he might have brought about that nuclear Earth if his plans succeeded.

DC’s WWII Heroes

The appearance of G.I. Robot sparked great enthusiasm among fans of DC’s Golden and Silver Age. This character’s backstory reveals that Sgt. Rock and his comrades are part of the DC Universe, suggesting a possible presence of all DC’s World War II heroes such as the Losers (who share ties with the Flag family) and potentially even the Justice Society of America at some point. Additionally, G.I. Robot interacting with scientist Will Magnus may pave the way for the introduction of the Metal Men, a team of unique robots, each endowed with different personalities and abilities based on specific elements, created by Magnus.

The Long History of DCU’s Monterverse

The tales of The Bride and Eric Frankenstein underscore the prevalence of monster-like characters within the DC Universe. Both these figures have been established DC personas for quite some time, implying that there may also be a creature such as the Patchwork Man – a monster reminiscent of Swamp Thing – who shares similar origins. Monstrous beings are integral to this series, aligning with the title of the initial story arc in the DC Universe: “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters”. Historically, monsters have been significant figures within the DC Universe; while many serve as fearsome adversaries, just as many stand as heroes. It’s plausible that Task Force M could play a pivotal role in managing the monstrous entities of this world moving forward.

The DCU Batman Universe

More Hero & Villain Teases

As a die-hard fan of cinema and comics, I’ve come to realize that fictional cities like Star City and Metropolis are just as real to me. Metropolis, home to Superman in the 2025 movie, is self-explanatory. But it was Nina’s origin story that unveiled Star City, paving the way for characters such as Green Arrow to make their appearance.

Gorilla Grodd, a menacing figure in the DC Universe, has emerged as a significant potential threat. Using his telepathic abilities, he manipulates people like chess pieces, leading towards humanity’s destruction – a familiar role for this simian despot, seeking dominion over our species.

In essence, Grodd fits perfectly into this scenario; although he’s commonly depicted as a savage beast in line with the title “Gods and Monsters,” he is also an intellectually astute villain who manipulates situations from behind the scenes. The presence of Grodd ensures the existence of Gorilla City, and possibly characters like Solivar and even the Ultra-Humanite in his albino gorilla form. This could potentially lead to encounters with the Flash and the dual cities of Central City and Keystone City, depending on whether the DCU decides to revisit the Earth-Two concept, which was originally home to Keystone and the Justice Society, given the current trend of multiverse explorations.

The DCU Is More Fully Formed Than We Guessed

In an unexpected yet brilliant move, Creature Commandos served as an innovative approach to introducing fans to the DC Universe. Previously, it was believed that following the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) method, which involves a gradual introduction at the beginning of the universe, was the only path to success. However, Gunn chose a different route with Creature Commandos: he leveraged the existing knowledge of DC among fans, such as The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, Batman, Gotham City, and Themyscira, to broaden the scope of his universe. By utilizing each member of Task Force M, he created opportunities for a wide range of DC characters and concepts to emerge.

I found “Creature Commandos” to be an exceptional introduction to the DC Universe, igniting my anticipation for what lies ahead. It’s like having the best, most thrilling sneak peek at a franchise – a seven-episode series that tantalized us with glimpses of this exciting new chapter in the DC cinematic journey. I have full faith in James Gunn.

You can stream Creature Commandos on Max.
