The cinema debut of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has significantly boosted the resale value of many Sonic games, with prices climbing noticeably. In fact, movies often affect the worth of comic books and video games they’re based on, a trend that’s been evident with both earlier Sonic titles like Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. However, it’s the third movie in the series that has had the most significant financial impact thus far, as it adapts some of the older Sonic video games.
According to Price Charting’s data analysis, it appears that Sonic games featuring Shadow the Hedgehog have experienced significant increases in value. This trend is particularly noticeable in the case of “Sonic Adventure 2,” which was Shadow’s debut game. Before the release of “Sonic 3,” a complete copy of “Sonic Adventure 2” for Sega Dreamcast typically sold for around $140. However, since then, the price has soared, with an average value now at approximately $210. Some copies have even been sold for over $300.
The Nintendo GameCube version of Sonic Adventure 2, known as Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, has experienced a significant price surge. Before the release of Sonic 3, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle was selling for approximately $60. However, following its theatrical debut, prices skyrocketed. At present, the average resale value for Sonic Adventure 2: Battle stands at around $130, with Player’s Choice editions fetching slightly lower prices.
Clearly, Shadow’s exclusive game, “Shadow the Hedgehog,” has significantly appreciated in worth recently. The cost of “Shadow the Hedgehog” differs based on the platform it’s available on, but all versions have nearly doubled their value over the past few weeks. On average, the PS2 version is being sold for around $65, the Xbox version is going for about $90, and the GameCube edition is surprisingly high at approximately $145.
In most cases, steep increases in price tend to be followed by a decrease over time for items such as the Sonic video games we’re discussing. As we move further away from the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, you can expect these prices to gradually return to their original levels. If the release of Sonic 3 inspired you to start collecting vintage Sonic games, it might have been better to start your collection a bit later.
