Top 7 Alternatives to Dungeons & Dragons

In recent times, there’s been a significant revival in the popularity of Dungeons and Dragons. Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro are leveraging this resurgence, releasing movies, games, and even updating Dungeons & Dragons 5e for their 2024 and 2025 series. However, these moves have left some fans dissatisfied, as they prefer using older content over the new offerings. In fact, some players have abandoned the game entirely due to Hasbro’s decisions, even when those decisions were later retracted. Luckily, there are numerous tabletop role-playing games available, and we’ve compiled a list of some excellent alternatives to Dungeons and Dragons that you can explore below.

Pathfinder

Pathfinder, created by Paizo, is often considered an alternate version to Dungeons and Dragons, boasting numerous similarities in gameplay and setting. Both games originated from the fantasy realm and share comparable mechanics. Initially, Pathfinder was developed based on the 3.5 edition of Dungeons & Dragons before it evolved into the 4th edition. The system retains the complexity of its predecessor and offers flexible character development options. Due to these similarities, Pathfinder was nicknamed “D&D 3.75”. Since then, it has established its unique identity while providing Dungeons & Dragons enthusiasts with a familiar yet distinct alternative.

Pathfinder 2e offers 23 primary character classes, boasting numerous advanced options, along with over 30 diverse ancestries, or races, some resembling those found in Dungeons & Dragons, yet introducing fresh possibilities as well. The game mechanics are reminiscent, encompassing quests, storytelling, miniature figures, dice, and maps. Regularly, Paizo introduces new content and adventures, ensuring an abundance of engaging material for both players and game masters. Moving from Dungeons & Dragons to Pathfinder requires a bit of adaptation, yet provides a more flexible option for tabletop role-playing games.

Daggerheart

As a fellow gamer, I can’t wait to dive into the magical realm of Daggerheart, the upcoming tabletop RPG by Critical Role. These guys are legendary in the D&D community, having grown from humble Pathfinder beginnings and then evolving through D&D before finally deciding to craft their very own TTRPG.

Daggerheart, much like other fantasy worlds, has its roots firmly entrenched in the vivid imaginations of Critical Role and Darrington Press. Fans will find a sense of homecoming in its familiarity, yet there’s a fresh twist that sets it apart. This unique world and innovative features promise an exhilarating experience for both newcomers to tabletop roleplaying games and seasoned veterans alike.

One distinctive aspect of the game Daggerheart lies in the role reversal it provides, where the game master assumes a player-like position. This is achieved by means of its unique two-dice system, Hope and Fear. The outcome of these dice determines four possibilities: yes, yes, no, and no and. When players achieve good or poor results with Hope, they receive a bonus, but when they roll with fear, success or failure occurs, granting the GM a bonus instead. The GM can then leverage these Fear points to engage more actively with the party, essentially assuming a pseudo-player role. At its debut in 2025, Daggerheart will offer eight character classes and 18 ancestries or races. Upon its launch in Spring of 2025, players will have their first opportunity to explore this tabletop RPG and contribute to its development.

BREAK!! RPG

Take a break! “BREAK!! RPG” is another tabletop role-playing game in the fantasy genre, but it stands out with an aesthetic distinct from games like Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, and Daggerheart. Its unique style is reminiscent of Studio Ghibli, The Legend of Zelda, and more, catching the eyes of fans. It surpassed its Kickstarter goal, demonstrating the enthusiasm and dedication behind this project. Designed to be easy and swift to grasp, it offers a streamlined and contemporary rule set for fantasy enthusiasts, reflecting the essence of classic gaming. From problem-solving to combat, character development, loot collection, and more, BREAK!! RPG boasts many beloved elements from D&D, SNES games, and anime. Additionally, it presents a distinctive setting that is post-apocalyptic but not overly dark or grim, offering a balance that allows for both somber and lighter moments.

In this role-playing game, gamers are given a variety of options for character creation. They can choose from eight distinct roles or classes, such as Battle Princess and Murder Princess, and up to eleven species, ranging from Native Humans to Dimensional Stray Humans, which is an intriguing aspect that allows players to embody characters from the popular “isekai” genre. The game, BREAK!! RPG, strongly reflects its anime roots in both its gameplay and world design.

As of now, the official store for the game isn’t operational yet, presumably because the development team is still working on fulfilling Kickstarter pledges and setting up their operations. However, players can look forward to immersive and enjoyable experiences with BREAK!! RPG.

Dark Heresy

The universe of Warhammer 40,000 is bleak and devoid of optimism, yet its games are exhilarating. For tabletop role-playing enthusiasts, there’s a myriad of ways to delve into this world, but Dark Heresy stands out as one of the top choices. In this game, players assume the roles of acolytes working under an Inquisitor of the Imperium of Man, tracking down and eliminating heretics and extraterrestrials. It offers a swift character creation process to immerse you in the action promptly and versatile rules that encompass combat, stealth, and social interaction.

In the game known as Dark Heresy, you’ll find a set of fundamental rules that offer seven distinct character classes to pick from. These options have been expanded upon through additional books. Typically, players in this universe will belong to the Imperium of Man, but there’s also an opportunity to play as alien races. Although other games have emerged to replace Games Workshop’s Dark Heresy, it still stands out as one of the richest and most comprehensive. Newer releases may introduce changes, but Dark Heresy provides a compelling look into the grim and unforgiving existence in the Warhammer 40,000 universe compared to the experiences of a Space Marine, as portrayed in Warhammer 40,000K: Space Marine 2.

Mutants and Masterminds

For enthusiasts of superheroes, the game known as “Mutants and Masterminds” is an excellent platform to realize your power-driven dreams within a contemporary setting. Whether you’re a fan of DC or Marvel, this game allows you to replicate your beloved characters or invent entirely new ones. What truly sets “Mutants and Masterminds” apart is its ability to generate compelling narratives and cater to the desire for wish fulfillment, given the surge in popularity of superheroes across various media outlets. This game offers multiple editions and books, ensuring a wealth of content for almost every player.

Instead of adhering to a typical class structure found in many tabletop role-playing games, Mutant and Masterminds employs a power level system. This allows players to select diverse powers and enhance their potency. While the process of character creation in this game is more laborious, and the game master needs to meticulously craft villains and scenarios, the end result is rewarding. There are pre-written games available for beginners to familiarize themselves with the system, before eventually venturing into creating their own characters and storylines.

Liminal Horror

If you’re seeking a tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) that offers a more down-to-earth, authentic experience, Liminal Horror could be just what you need. This game centers around ordinary individuals who find themselves in extraordinary situations, often within a horror context. Imagine a blend of the atmospheric suspense from Alan Wake and the investigative elements of True Detective, and you’ll grasp the essence of Liminal Horror. One standout feature of this game is its accessibility. You can find PDFs of the fundamental rules online, and crafting custom content is a breeze thanks to the user-friendly system design.

One key factor that makes Liminal Horror appealing for many gamers is its streamlined rules and adaptable gameplay. Players assume the roles of investigators, be they professionals or simply drawn by fate, often encountering terrifying or otherworldly horrors. The primary objective is survival, a challenge not all players will overcome. The creators describe it as “a game about enduring mysteries rather than solving them.” Additionally, Liminal Horror offers a lot of flexibility, allowing players to develop various scenarios inspired by works such as Control, the blend of The Last of Us and Twin Peaks, and of course, the Cthulhu mythos. In essence, Liminal Horror is easy to grasp yet powerful enough to generate intricate narratives and engaging interactions, making it an ideal starting point for delving into more complex game systems.

Cyberpunk Red

As a die-hard gamer, I’ve found myself immersed in the gritty, cyber-infused world of Cyberpunk RED – the tabletop role-playing game spinoff of the much-anticipated video game, Cyberpunk 2077. This captivating tale unfolds as a prequel to the game, set roughly in the year 2045, following the conclusion of the 4th Corporate War. While the titans of industry are nursing their wounds and plotting their next moves, I, along with my fellow players, step into the shoes of those left behind, scavenging for survival amidst the ruins of a once-great society.

The beautifully crafted books of Cyberpunk RED are brimming with intricate lore and world-building details, providing invaluable insights for game masters while leaving ample room for us to weave our own tales within this richly imagined universe.

In Cyberpunk RED, you’ll find 8 distinct character roles or classes to pick from, mirroring some of the archetypes found for V in Cyberpunk 2077. The storyteller has leeway to shape the narrative, and like in Night City (from Cyberpunk 2077), unexpected events can occur, providing players with various routes to explore. Cyberpunk RED simplifies gameplay without compromising its complexity, notably through the revamp of Netrunning. Players can either follow pre-written scenarios to grasp the game mechanics or dive in and experience Night City as they see fit.

Role-playing games on a tabletop have never been as vibrant and accessible as they are now. The legendary game, Dungeons and Dragons, has expanded the horizons and made this immersive experience available to many more individuals. However, while D&D remains an iconic system that is likely to hold its position for a considerable period, fresh tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) are constantly being developed and published. Therefore, don’t hesitate to explore something novel from the growing collection of TTRPGs available.
