The Academy Awards ceremony is not in danger of being cancelled, industry sources have assured.
This year‘s extravagant event has been met with some uncertainty, as the tabloid newspaper The Sun hinted at a committee, potentially featuring celebrities like Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, who are rumored to be considering different possibilities for the event’s organization.
According to the article, the most striking backup plan under consideration is to cancel the Academy Awards altogether for this year, marking the first time such an action has been taken in the event’s 96-year span.
This year’s Oscar ceremony is surrounded by doubt due to a massive wildfire that has devastated significant areas of Los Angeles, California, the city known for its entertainment industry, where the event usually takes place.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, they’ve emphatically refuted The Sun’s statements. They reported that high-ranking individuals from the Academy have confirmed that no such proposal is under consideration, and no such advisory committee has been established.
The trade association has explained that the Academy’s board of directors, made up of a total of 55 members, is actively discussing the most appropriate course of action for the Oscars following the devastating fire that has so far resulted in the loss of 25 lives.
To date, some adjustments have been made such as extending the Oscar voting period, pushing back the announcement of nominations, cancelling the nominee luncheon, and moving the presentation of the scientific and technical awards (usually not aired on TV) to a later date.
This year’s Academy Awards aims to create a solemn atmosphere, raise funds for wildfire relief, and honor individuals who courageously battled the flames.
After the Golden Globe Awards held this month, it is anticipated that the main competitors at the event will include the musical “Emilia Pérez”, the horror film “The Substance” with its focus on the human body, the dramatic film “The Brutalist”, and the comedy “A Real Pain”.
