Carrie Underwood has stirred up debate after she agreed to sing “America the Beautiful” at President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration. Fans and critics have had varied responses to her decision, but the hosts on The View shared a variety of viewpoints, with some expressing approval and others vocalizing their disapproval.
Underwood addressed the backlash with a statement released Monday.
The country musician, who was a contestant on American Idol, expressed his gratitude for being chosen to perform at the Inauguration, stating that he deeply cherishes our nation. He feels privileged to contribute in some way to this significant occasion. Furthermore, he is humbled by the opportunity and believes it’s crucial for everyone to unite during such times, working towards unity and focusing on a promising future.
As a devoted cinephile, I must confess that during yesterday’s screening of “The View,” Joy Behar expressed her reservations about Kevin Underwood’s declaration of patriotism and unity. She seemed to doubt the authenticity of his words.
As a film enthusiast, I pondered, “How can one ardently cherish their homeland and simultaneously champion someone with a criminal past, whose actions seem geared towards its demise? That’s my take on it.
Sunny Hostin, one of Behar’s co-hosts, expressed similar feelings, saying that if she were in Underwood’s position, she would firmly decline the invitation. She further commented, “I honestly can’t picture myself standing on that stage and pretending that everything he did is acceptable.
Regardless of the criticisms directed towards them, Behar and Hostin acknowledged Underwood’s prerogative to make her personal choice.
Alternatively,
In spite of facing criticism, both Behar and Hostin agreed that it was Underwood’s call to decide for herself.
Or,
Though criticized, Behar and Hostin conceded that Underwood had the liberty to choose her path.
In simpler terms, Behar said, “I wouldn’t advise anyone against performing at the inauguration since I support freedom of speech,” and Hostin concurred that artists have the liberty to perform wherever they choose.
Yet, not every host on The View was critical of Underwood’s action. Surprisingly, Whoopi Goldberg, though not a fan of Trump, voiced her support for the country singer’s move.
Goldberg stated, “I am with her on this. If I feel free to decide where to perform, then she should too. Therefore, I must back her up. This doesn’t imply I’d enjoy watching. In fact, I won’t be watching. That’s just my stance.
Goldberg drew an analogy between the situation and the criticism MSNBC’s Morning Joe hosts, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, received after meeting with Trump following his first victory. She asserted that, similar to Underwood, Scarborough and Brzezinski were merely doing what they believed was necessary.
Alyssa Farah Griffin additionally spoke up for Underwood, expressing her disapproval of the habitual exclusion of artists due to their political connections.
Griffin expressed her hope that we’re transitioning into a time when people’s livelihoods aren’t threatened due to political differences. If you disagree with Underwood’s actions, she suggested that you express your displeasure by choosing not to listen to her music or attend her concerts.
Griffin did suggest, however, that Underwood’s choice might have been strategic.
It’s expected that she will soon be recognized as a symbol of MAGA and conservative America, and it seems likely that she will earn a considerable amount of wealth from this recognition,” she mused.
