During the Team Go Rocket Fashion Week: Taken Over event in Pokemon Go, players will find themselves battling more Grunts and Leaders from Team Go Rocket. This event kicks off on January 15th and runs through January 19th, introducing Shroodle to the game. Just like any other Go Rocket takeover, trainers will have the opportunity to catch a Legendary Shadow Pokemon, liberating it from Giovanni’s grasp. In addition, Niantic has made an under-the-radar adjustment to expand the pool of Shadow Pokemon even further with this new event.
Due to a recent unexpected update, trainers now have a greater chance to capture Shadow Pokemon through Remote Raids. This is because Niantic has allowed players to join Shadow Raids from anywhere, making it easier for many to battle against powerful Shadow Pokemon like Palkia and Ho-Oh. The remote raid pass has been a contentious issue among Pokemon fans due to Niantic’s previous emphasis on in-person raids. However, this change is particularly exciting for players living in rural areas or with mobility issues. Furthermore, this latest Go Rocket event also broadens the ways in which Shadow Pokemon can be encountered within Pokemon Go.
In a fight against Go Rocket Grunts, trainers often get an opportunity to capture one of their Pokémon following a successful defeat. Usually, the Shadow Pokémon encounter is with the first Pokémon the Grunt deployed, but exceptions can occur. For certain types, you might sometimes encounter the second Pokémon in their team. Nevertheless, this happens less frequently than with the initial Pokémon, and not every trainer type experiences it. Some, like Dragon-types, have historically been restricted to the first member of the team – until recently.
Pokemon Go Players Can Now Catch More Dragon-Type Shadow Pokemon
During the Fashion Week: Taken Over event, it wasn’t explicitly mentioned in the preceding blog posts that there was an update to the Go Rocket Grunt battles. However, players have observed a seemingly new development – they are now encountering Shadow Dragonair, which is the second Pokemon typically used by certain Dragon-type Go Rocket Grunts.

Before this occasion, no trainer had previously encountered a second Pokemon from a Dragon-type Grunt. However, with this event, trainers will have increased chances to find Shadow Dragonair due to Team Go Rocket’s frequent appearances. Some fans think this could be a hint towards the upcoming Lunar New Year event, as Dragonair resembles a snake – a symbol associated with the Year of the Snake. Additionally, it’s near the end of 2024’s Year of the Dragon, making this an excellent opportunity for trainers to celebrate and appreciate Dragon-type Pokemon before the year ends.
Besides Shadow Dragonair, other trainers are also encountering new Dragon-type Shadow Pokémon such as Shadow Gabite and the dual-type Grass/Dragon Pokémon, Alolan Exeggutor, in their battles against Go Rocket Grunts.
Though the new opportunity for Go Rocket encounters is thrilling, some players are disheartened that Shadow Dragonair remains unavailable as a Shiny variant. Instead, they’d prefer to capture a Shiny Shadow Dragonite, which would make an exceptional addition to their teams. Regrettably, this isn’t feasible at the moment. However, the introduction of these changes and the transition to remote Shadow Raids in 2025 will make it simpler for trainers to amass Shadow Pokemon within their collections.
The update on Go Rocket encounters is exciting news, but some players are upset because Shiny Dragonair remains unavailable in its Shadow form. They’d rather catch a Shiny Shadow Dragonite instead, as it would be an exceptional team member. Unfortunately, that isn’t possible yet. Nonetheless, this change and the move to remote Shadow Raids in 2025 will make it easier for trainers to collect Shadow Pokemon.
