In my humble opinion as a film critic, the finale of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” titled “The Real Good Guys,” offers an intriguing twist on Ja Na Nawood’s past. This revelation, though surprising, sheds light on a hidden aspect of the character.
During a nail-biting sequence where Jod confronts Wendle, his father, the pirate unexpectedly discloses a piece of his history – he had, in fact, received some Jedi training during his youth. This revelation serves to challenge Wim’s belief that the so-called “good guys” are poised to rescue At Attin from the pirates.
In an attempt to debunk Wim’s faith in the arrival of the “good guys,” Jod narrates a story about a Jedi who stumbled upon him when he was living in a makeshift shelter underground. “She may have been desperate and as unkempt as I was,” Jod recalls, “but she told me I had potential.” This anecdote adds depth to Jod’s character, implying that his allegiance to the pirates might not be set in stone.
Sadly, Jod’s alliance with the Jedi didn’t endure. His training was barely underway when unidentified attackers trailed them. In the end, he lamented, “I had to watch as they took her life.” This statement underscores his perspective that the galaxy is a harsh realm, offering mere glimpses of hope.
Before the debut of Skeleton Crew, Lucasfilm marketed Jod Na Nawood as a being with Force sensitivity, but the character’s actual identity remained a secret that unfolded throughout the series. As the episodes progressed, it appeared more and more likely that Jod was not a Jedi. His struggles with mastering a lightsaber suggested this, and his apparent ability to manipulate only metallic objects (which can be influenced by magnets) led viewers to suspect that he was employing crafty tricks to feign being a potent Force user in order to gain an edge.
In “The Real Good Guys”, we find out why Jod appears so inexpert in Jedi skills. His lack of formal training at the Jedi Temple suggests that any knowledge he gained was likely during escape missions while partnered with an unnamed Jedi, leaving little time for extensive learning. If their partnership hadn’t been interrupted sadly, he might have mastered lightsaber use and honed his Force abilities more effectively. As things are now, he’s making the best of his limited education in the Jedi arts.
In the given episode, Jod offers a succinct summary of the events, avoiding specific details about who murdered his Jedi comrade. Considering Jod referred to her as “desperate and worn,” it’s possible that this incident took place following Order 66. It’s likely that Jod’s master was on the run from the Empire, taking whatever steps necessary to survive. Since Darth Vader and the Inquisitors were ruthlessly hunting down any surviving Jedi during the Great Jedi Purge, it seems probable that the Inquisitors located Jod and his master.
It’s possible that Jod’s history could make for an interesting storyline in the future by Lucasfilm, but at this moment, it’s uncertain if that will come to pass since “Skeleton Crew” hasn’t been renewed for a second season yet. There are whispers that characters from the show might appear in Dave Filoni’s movie set in the New Republic era. Given the positive reception of “Skeleton Crew” and Jude Law’s captivating portrayal as Jod, it would be a shame if the studio didn’t delve deeper into the character. If we don’t see Jod again on-screen, his brief Jedi training could be the focus of a novel or comic book series within the Star Wars canon, making use of its multi-platform storytelling potential.
