Following what felt like an endless stretch of anticipation, it was this morning when Nintendo Switch 2 was officially unveiled. Nintendo chose to keep the specifics about its upcoming system relatively scant, instead opting for a video to carry most of the conversation. Despite the limited information disclosed, there are numerous intriguing details that can be gleaned from the trailer – such as updates to the Mario Kart series, and new capabilities we can look forward to. The trailer appears to validate one significant change to the Joy-Con controller, a modification that had been leaked several months prior. According to this leak, the Joy-Cons are set to receive an updated function that will enable them to be utilized like a computer mouse.
In today’s video at around the 1 minute and 12 second mark, it looks like the Joy-Con controllers are positioned sideways and moving upward, almost like they’re wagging a tail. The wrist straps on these controllers really give that impression. If you squint a bit, it even seems reminiscent of a computer mouse in action. Now, I can’t help but wonder if Nintendo’s not hinting at the Joy-Cons acting as a mouse for Switch 2. It would be quite a coincidence if they weren’t, given the resemblance to its animal namesake. You can check out the system trailer down below if you want a closer look.
Embracing the potential for developers to employ the Joy-Con controller as a substitute for a mouse presents numerous opportunities. First-person shooters represent the most apparent application, and their incorporation into Nintendo Switch games, particularly with Call of Duty titles arriving on the platform following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, would be significant.
However, this expanded functionality isn’t limited to first-person shooters. Games such as RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, which previously struggled with controls on the Switch, could see improved performance. Similarly, the Sims games, which have so far largely bypassed the Switch, may find a home on the upcoming Switch 2, and mouse support would bring the gaming experience more in line with that of a PC.
An alternative scenario is that Nintendo may introduce a tool similar to a mouse for reviving Super Nintendo (SNES) games on their Nintendo Switch Online service. Previous data leaks hinted at the potential arrival of games compatible with the classic SNES Mouse accessory on the Switch platform. Potentially, popular titles like “Mario Paint” and “Super Mario & Wario” could be ported to the Switch 2, and it’s not unthinkable that Nintendo might develop updated versions of these games as well.
Although these prospects are quite thrilling, Nintendo enthusiasts will need to stay patient as we await official updates. Nintendo has already confirmed that a Nintendo Direct is scheduled for April 2nd, providing additional details about the upcoming system. It’s speculated that there might be some announcements in the weeks prior to this presentation, such as insights into the Joy-Cons and backward compatibility. However, at this moment, it’s unclear what exactly the company has planned. Nevertheless, Nintendo fans appear quite eager based on early responses!
