Without a shadow of a doubt, the upcoming Stephen King adaptation titled “The Monkey” undeniably falls into the horror genre. However, its latest trailer hints at a strong comedic undertone as well. As it’s adapted from a short story with the same name, the film is marketed as a blend of horror and comedy, and based on what we’ve seen so far, it appears to strike an intricate balance quite effectively. The movie seems to be brimming with gore, shocking jump scares, and brutal violence, but the intermittent ironic humor adds an eerie depth to the overall experience. “The Monkey” is set to premiere in theaters on Friday, February 21st, giving fans ample time to familiarize themselves with its content beforehand.
The fresh trailer for “The Monkey” unveils its main concept through a voice-over narration, keeping things straightforward initially while hinting at deeper exploration later on. Some hilarious scenarios may cause laughter in the cinema, alongside sharp dialogues and performances from the actors.
In this trailer, many scenes have been shown previously, but the Red Band version offers a glimpse of increased brutality and grisly imagery, which appears to be integral to the movie. Scenes include an individual getting shot with a crossbow, beheaded at a hibachi eatery, squashed under a bowling ball, among others. The sinister toy monkey that’s been heavily promoted in the marketing campaign is also tied to these gruesome images.
The central idea in this narrative revolves around identical siblings Hal and Bill discovering an old toy monkey hidden in their father’s loft. They later learn that this seemingly innocuous artifact was haunted by some malevolent power, resulting in a series of tragic deaths. Desperate to put the nightmare behind them, they attempt to conceal the toy permanently so no one else will stumble upon it. However, years pass and the toy resurfaces, not only instigating further chaos but compelling the brothers to confront their past once more.
Originally, this brief tale appeared in “Gallery Magazine” all the way back in 1980, eventually making its way into Stephen King’s short story compilation titled “Skeleton Crew.” Often hailed as a reinterpretation of the classic “The Monkey’s Paw,” it contains unique touches that are distinctively King’s. The story was well-received by many avid King readers, but hasn’t managed to eclipse his other works in terms of lasting impact over time.
Movie director Oz Perkins transformed the narrative into a script and took charge of its production. Interestingly, he also stars in this film, claiming it’s unlike any other work he’s done before. You can judge for yourself when The Monkey premieres in cinemas on February 21st. Stephen King’s novel Skeleton Crew is already available for purchase in print, digital, and audio formats.
