As a dedicated PlayStation fan myself, I’ve been eagerly awaiting any news about Bloodborne since the PS5 release. The community’s desire for either Bloodborne 2 or a remaster/remake of the original game has been loud and clear. However, PlayStation has remained silent on the matter, which seems to have only fueled our collective anticipation. Recently, Shuhei Yoshida, the longtime PlayStation boss, shared his thoughts on this topic. Here’s what he had to say.
In conversation with Kinda Funny Games, Yoshida expressed that he feels FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki has a strong personal attachment to the game Bloodborne, as it was jointly created by him and the studio. However, due to Miyazaki’s ongoing involvement in projects like Elden Ring and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice over the past few years, he hasn’t had the opportunity to revisit Bloodborne. Yoshida also mentioned that Miyazaki might not want any other studio to handle a project linked with Bloodborne, although PlayStation could allow it since they own the intellectual property. Instead, those in charge at PlayStation seem to be mindful of Miyazaki’s wishes and are choosing to keep the franchise untouched.
Yoshida expressed his own perspective regarding the situation. Since he stepped down from first-party duties, he’s not privy to current events. However, he believes Miyazaki-san has a deep affection for the game “Bloodborne”, and that’s why he thinks Miyazaki is intrigued but too busy and successful to work on it himself. Yet, he doesn’t want others to handle it. This, according to Yoshida, is his theory. He added that the PlayStation team honors Miyazaki’s wishes in this matter.
Yoshida clarified that his comments were just his personal opinion, not revealing any confidential information about Bloodborne’s development at PlayStation. However, his thoughts on the subject provide a logical explanation as to why we haven’t seen much new with Bloodborne in the last ten years.
If FromSoftware decides to revisit the Bloodborne series, it’s likely that they would need some free time after completing projects like Elden Ring, Armored Core, and other ongoing tasks. It’s expected that Elden Ring: Nightreign will be released in 2025, and once that game has been launched, there might be an opportunity for Bloodborne to return with potential collaboration from PlayStation.
