Amandaland: Release Date, Cast, and What to Expect from the Hilarious Spin-Off!

Fans of Motherland, get ready! It’s now time for an exciting journey through the challenging landscape of Amandaland, the long-awaited spin-off that delves into the new phase of Lucy Punch’s character as a single parent.

The original show garnered praise for its portrayal of everyday motherhood in the middle class, and it concluded victoriously by receiving the award for Best Written Comedy at the British Academy Television Awards.

As a movie enthusiast, it’s clear that the trio, Sharon Horgan, Holly Walsh, and Helen Serafinowicz, who reunite as co-creators, have a challenging task ahead if they aim to surpass their previous accomplishments. However, with Amandaland, they seem to be well on their way to delivering something truly remarkable.

In the upcoming series, actress Philippa Dunne and Joanna Lumley, who previously starred in Motherland with Punch, will reprise their roles as Amanda’s friend Anne and mother Felicity respectively. Additionally, several popular comedic actors have signed up to be part of this sequel.

If you can’t wait to catch Amandaland on BBC One and iPlayer, here’s what we currently know about the upcoming sitcom. Enjoy!

When will Amandaland be released?

Excitedly speaking as a movie buff, I must share some thrilling news! While the exact release date for Amandaland remains unconfirmed, here’s what we know so far: The BBC has officially announced that this highly-anticipated production will be premiered on both BBC One and iPlayer sometime in February 2025. Mark your calendars, fellow film enthusiasts, as this is one event you won’t want to miss!

Fans of Motherland have been eagerly anticipating a return to the hilarious universe of the sitcom since its 2022 holiday special, Last Christmas, marked its departure.

Amandaland cast: New and returning for Motherland spin-off

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that I, along with the rest of the enthusiastic audience, will be watching Lucy Punch take center stage in Amandaland. She’s reprising her iconic role from the smash hit BBC sitcom Motherland, a role she originally brought to life.

Additionally, Philippa Dunne reappears as Anne, the patient best friend of Motherland, while comedic icon Joanna Lumley returns to portray Amanda’s mother, Felicity, who graced us with her presence on two notable occasions during the initial series.

Or simply:
Philippa Dunne continues her role as Anne, Motherland’s loyal friend, and Joanna Lumley returns as Felicity, Amanda’s mother from the original series who made a couple of unforgettable guest appearances.

Rather than relying too heavily on past characters, Amandaland’s spin-off will also introduce several fresh faces. This should allow the series to forge its unique identity.

In this production, you’ll encounter Samuel Anderson from Gavin & Stacey portraying Mal, Siobhan McSweeney of Derry Girls playing Della, Rochenda Sandall of Line of Duty taking on the role of Fi, Ekow Quartey from Trying as JJ, and Peter Serafinowicz from The Gentlemen appearing as Johannes.

In summary, here’s the full confirmed Amandaland cast (so far):

  • Lucy Punch as Amanda
  • Philippa Dunne as Anne
  • Joanna Lumley as Felicity
  • Samuel Anderson as Mal
  • Siobhan McSweeney as Della
  • Rochenda Sandall as Fi
  • Ekow Quartey as JJ
  • Peter Serafinowicz as Johannes

In addition to the creators of Motherland, Sharon Horgan, Holly Walsh, and Helen Serafinowicz, are contributing their talents off-screen for this sequel. This new installment was jointly developed with the original series author, Barunka O’Shaughnessy.

Additionally, Laurence Rickard, who is recognized by his pseudonyms Caveman Robin and Headless Sir Humphrey Bone, contributed to the scriptwriting of Amandaland as well.

Horgan expressed his feelings about the spin-off by saying, “I genuinely felt sad as I bid farewell to Motherland. There’s so much affection for that series and its characters. Therefore, it was truly exciting to have the opportunity to continue the stories of Amanda, Anne, and of course, Felicity.

In their respective roles, Lucy, Phillipa, and Joanna shine brightly, accompanied by a fresh, hilarious, and gifted group of actors.

I’m eagerly anticipating sharing the upcoming aspects of parenthood, as well as the unique camaraderie fostered among parents at the school playground.

Amandaland plot: What is it about?

After her divorce, Amanda was forced to move from a larger home and relocate to South Harlesden – an area more commonly referred to by real estate agents as SoHa (not to be confused with the neighborhood near Wormwood Scrubs prison).

With Manus and Georgie now attending high school, Amanda finds herself navigating the challenges of raising adolescents – confronting issues such as underage drinking, false social media profiles, and ecological worry. Even a confident parent like Amanda needs help dealing with these troublesome scenarios.

Amanda’s mother, Felicity (Lumley), is almost always present, and yet she refuses to acknowledge that she feels isolated. There’s a hint of an unbalanced relationship between them, characterized by indirect flattery and subtle criticisms, particularly regarding her recent living arrangements.

Following a short taste of independence, Anne (Dunne) finds herself once more assisting Amanda in navigating the parents’ social circle at their child’s new school. It’s comforting indeed to have Anne around.

Is there an Amandaland trailer?

Alas, there’s nothing yet – we’ll update this page when the first footage drops.
