Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Creators Explain Why Finale Has No Cliffhanger (And They’re Right)

In their conversation with Collider following the release of the final episode of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” creators Jon Watts and Christopher Ford discussed their reasons for avoiding a cliffhanger in the series finale. They opted for a conclusive ending instead, as they felt that their audience had already experienced enough suspenseful cliffhangers throughout the season. This decision was a deliberate choice to provide closure, alluding to how certain episodes ended with intriguing teases, such as Jod Na Nawood grabbing Tak Rennod’s lightsaber from the vault.

Our inspiration came from classic pirate series and shows like Flash Gordon. We felt determined to leave our audience astonished with a ‘What?!’ moment,” Ford explained. “However, we aimed to give the story a clear beginning, middle, and end that would allow children to follow along.” Although the Skeleton Crew story has reached its conclusion, Ford admitted there are still unresolved questions, such as Jod’s fate.

Titled “The Real Good Guys,” this story is reminiscent of ’80s Amblin Entertainment productions like “The Goonies” and “E.T. – the Extra-Terrestrial.” It revolves around a quartet of friends – Wim, Neel, Fern, and KB – who inadvertently find themselves stranded in the Star Wars galaxy. Their goal is to return home, leading them to encounter the enigmatic Jod Na Nawood, a pirate in search of the legendary treasure of At Attin, their native planet. As they band together with their parents, our young heroes aim to save At Attin from Jod’s pirates, achieving success with the help of the New Republic. Unlike previous episodes of “Skeleton Crew,” “The Real Good Guys” does not include a post-credits scene hinting at future events.

Currently, the second season of “Skeleton Crew” hasn’t been confirmed. However, creators John Watts and Jon Favreau have concepts for a follow-up, but they haven’t engaged in any official talks with Lucasfilm regarding these ideas yet. If the series gets renewed for another season, it would likely involve a significant time leap to accommodate the growth of the young actors.

It’s wise that Watts and Ford chose to wrap up the show “Skeleton Crew” with a definitive ending, given the uncertainty of its success during production. If the series had hinted at future plotlines and then got cancelled, like what happened with “The Acolyte”, it would have been disappointing for fans to be left with unresolved cliffhangers. Unfortunately, “The Acolyte” was only a single season, leaving its final scenes unexplained. On the other hand, “Skeleton Crew” provides a self-contained story that viewers can revisit whenever they choose, even if it doesn’t return for more episodes.

As a dedicated Star Wars fan, I must admit that the captivating series “Skeleton Crew” shares the same New Republic era as “The Mandalorian” and “Ahsoka.” It would have been quite effortless (and perhaps irresistible) to establish some link with other projects in the franchise. A thrilling cliffhanger could have seamlessly woven the narrative into the ongoing tales of the MandoVerse, hinting at future adventures for Wim and his companions. However, such a move would have diminished the unique allure of “Skeleton Crew.” One of the show’s most enchanting aspects lies in its self-contained story, thriving independently within the vast Star Wars universe. If “Skeleton Crew” returns for another season, I hope the creators maintain this approach, crafting a narrative that offers a satisfying start, progression, and conclusion.
