Tom Cruise is predominantly recognized for his exhilarating performances in blockbuster action films such as Top Gun, Minority Report, and the Mission: Impossible series. However, it’s worth noting that this A-list actor has also established a significant footprint in the realm of science fiction throughout his career. Tom Cruise initially stepped into the limelight with his acting debut in the 1981 romantic film Endless Love. Following minor roles in Taps (1981), Losin’ It (1982), and The Outsiders (1983), he secured his first leading role in Risky Business (1983) and another major role in All the Right Moves (1983). Since then, Cruise has ascended to become one of Hollywood’s most recognizable figures. Over time, he earned the title as the foremost action star of his generation, but he has also showcased his versatility by venturing into science fiction projects.
Beyond his action blockbusters, Tom Cruise’s cinematic portfolio also includes numerous science fiction films that are definitely worth viewing. These three flicks have solidified him as the legendary figure in sci-fi cinema that we know today.
War of the Worlds
In 2005, Steven Spielberg reimagined H.G. Wells’ novel “War of the Worlds” with Tom Cruise as the lead character. The narrative unfolds from the perspective of Ray Ferrier and his family, who are caught in a devastating alien invasion. Dakota Fanning took on the role of Ray’s daughter Rachel, Justin Chatwin portrayed his son Robbie, and Miranda Otto played Ray’s former spouse, Mary Ann. Spielberg’s science fiction masterpiece grossed over $600 million globally, making it the fourth-highest-earning film of 2005. Additionally, it received three Oscar nominations.
Tom Cruise made a significant debut in science fiction films with “War of the Worlds,” delivering an outstanding lead performance that made it the most successful screen adaptation of the novel, showcasing his dominance in the sci-fi genre. Moreover, Cruise’s unique talent for making viewers invest emotionally in a character struggling against life-threatening circumstances is truly remarkable. Notably, Cruise had previously gained experience filming action sequences before “War of the Worlds,” so it’s unsurprising that he excelled in some of the movie’s epic action scenes.
Oblivion
Following his work on War of the Worlds, Tom Cruise embarked on another significant sci-fi venture in 2013 – Oblivion. This film was helmed by Joseph Kosinski, who later collaborated with Cruise again for Top Gun: Maverick in 2022. Interestingly, Oblivion was based on an unpublished graphic novel of the same name written by Kosinski. In this movie, Tom Cruise portrayed Jack Harper, a solitary drone repairman living on a post-apocalyptic Earth in the year 2077, left over from a war with extraterrestrial beings. His life takes an unexpected turn when he discovers a wrecked spacecraft containing a woman shrouded in mystery.
In the movie “Oblivion,” Tom Cruise’s performance solidified his standing as an exceptional lead actor in science fiction films. His role in “Collateral” translated seamlessly into the post-apocalyptic setting, demonstrating yet again his knack for juggling intense action scenes with subtle dramatic moments. The romantic storyline between Cruise’s character Jack and Olga Kurylenko’s Julia stood out as one of the film’s highlights, with both actors convincingly portraying their characters’ emotional bond.
Edge of Tomorrow
As a devoted cinephile, I must say that the 2014 sci-fi action flick “Edge of Tomorrow” stands out as one of the most distinctly original plots in the genre I’ve encountered recently. In this movie directed by Doug Liman, we find ourselves in a war between mankind and alien invaders. Tom Cruise plays Major Bill Cage, who finds himself in an unusual predicament: he respawns instantly whenever he dies in battle. And guess who helps him take down the aliens’ power source? None other than Emily Blunt’s character, Sergeant Rita Vrataski.
The unconventional, video game-style plot of “Edge of Tomorrow” offers an engaging and enjoyable experience for sci-fi enthusiasts. Tom Cruise executes numerous thrilling stunts in this film as his character navigates the combat zone repeatedly, effectively capturing the nerve-wracking tension that permeates the movie. Furthermore, Cruise’s portrayal of Cage’s transformation from a timid and green soldier into an unrelenting fighter willing to go to any lengths to accomplish his mission is noteworthy. Given Tom Cruise’s penchant for playing fearless characters who rush headlong into danger, the role in “Edge of Tomorrow” presents a refreshing change and underscores the actor’s versatility.
Discussions about a sequel to the movie “Edge of Tomorrow” have arisen lately, but no official announcements have been made. Moving forward, Tom Cruise is poised to spearhead a new sci-fi film that will be the first ever shot in outer space, with Doug Liman as director. This upcoming project, yet to be named, is currently being developed and promises to make Tom Cruise the first civilian to conduct a spacewalk. As such, enthusiasts of both Tom Cruise’s acting and science fiction films have something significant and groundbreaking to anticipate.
At present, you can catch “War of the Worlds” on both Paramount+ and MGM+, “Oblivion” on Netflix, and “Edge of Tomorrow” on Amazon Prime Video for streaming.
