At present, the movie “Wicked” is playing in cinemas, based on a Broadway musical version of the same title, which was adapted from Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.” Despite being nearly two months since its release, it remains high on the box office charts. Audience members continue to appreciate the tale of Elphaba Thropp and her transformation into the Wicked Witch of the West, but they also crave more from the storyline. Fortunately, the second part of this story, titled “Wicked: For Good,” is slated for release in November. However, fans won’t have to wait much longer to uncover additional chapters in Elphaba’s narrative.
Approximately three decades following the initial publication of “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West,” which offered a unique perspective on the classic “Wizard of Oz” tale, author Maguire is set to release a new book focusing on Elphaba’s childhood. Titled “Elphie: A Wicked Childhood, this book will delve into the story of young Elphie as she is molded by her parents Melena and Frex, grapples with familiar issues such as sibling jealousy upon the arrival of sisters Nessarose and brother Shell, and navigates friendships. The book also covers events that will shape her views on broader topics, including animal cruelty in Oz. Readers can expect to follow Elphie’s childhood journey, her educational experiences leading up to her encounter with Galinda at Shiz University.
Approximately three decades have passed since “Wicked” was released, and Maguire shared this thought with Paste Magazine: “Elphaba remains a puzzle to me even now, much like my family members – husband, children, and myself. We are all enigmas to one another, and it’s why we don’t simply greet each other once before venturing off on our own paths. Instead, we stay connected so that we may continue to learn about each other and cultivate care.
Wicked: For Good will feature new original songs.
Starting in March, fans can delve deeper into Elphie’s tale, as there are indeed three more books in the “The Wicked Years” series following “Wicked”, namely “Son of a Witch”, “A Lion Among Men”, and “Out of Oz”. The upcoming movie, “Wicked: For Good”, will hit theaters on November 21st. This sequel film not only advances Elphaba and Glinda’s narratives but also introduces an original song for Glinda, which Ariana Grande describes as crucial or pivotal.
She remarked, “This moment marks a significant step in Glinda’s journey. We’re given a glimpse of a side of her we haven’t seen before. In the stage production, this change takes place behind the scenes. However, in the film, we get to witness her making the choice that shapes her identity. It’s an honor to perform this song and be the first Glinda to breathe life into it.
