In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, every villain has committed atrocities against humanity in some fashion, but they aren’t all equally reprehensible. Some antagonists, like the Scarlet Witch and Loki, seem strikingly compassionate, while others are undeniably malevolent. Ranging from Kingpin to Thanos, these 10 villains represent the epitome of evil, with their nefarious actions spanning across different worlds. There’s no debate that these 10 bad guys rank among the most detestable in the franchise.
Wilson Fisk/Kingpin
Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, initially made his on-screen debut in Netflix’s series “Daredevil,” which aired from 2015 to 2018. Vincent D’Onofrio reprised his role for the 2021 Disney+ show “Hawkeye,” marking Fisk’s first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite Fisk’s troubled past, marked by abuse at the hands of his father, he has transformed into a truly reprehensible individual. His insatiable hunger for power has led him to commit heinous acts like murder, bombings, and organized crime. Even though Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) supposedly killed him in the finale of “Hawkeye,” Fisk miraculously survived, as he often does. The fact that Kingpin refuses to stay down makes his actions all the more despicable. He will return in “Daredevil: Born Again” to face Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) once more.
Obadiah Stane/Iron Monger
In the 2008 movie “Iron Man,” the main antagonist, Obadiah Stane (played by Jeff Bridges), was also known as Iron Monger. Originally a business partner of Tony Stark (portrayed by Robert Downey Jr.), Obadiah covertly collaborated with the Ten Rings group to bring down the man who later transformed into Iron Man. His connections to terrorism and his over-the-top wicked persona make him an effortlessly detestable adversary.
Darren Cross/Yellowjacket/M.O.D.O.K
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the character Darren Cross, portrayed by Corey Stoll, was introduced in the 2015 film “Ant-Man.” Originally working under Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), Cross later became fixated on quantum technology. With ambitions to sell weapons to HYDRA and the Ten Rings upon assuming the CEO position at Pym Technologies, he instead opted to use his Yellowjacket suit against Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and his allies. A fateful trip into the Quantum Realm left Cross disfigured, transforming him into M.O.D.O.K., who made an appearance in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” in 2023. Similar to Obadiah, Darren embodied the archetype of a ruthless mastermind willing to go to any lengths to achieve his goals.
Aldrich Killian
In simpler terms, Aldrich Killian, portrayed by Guy Pearce, is a character who embodies insanity. He’s the primary antagonist in the movie “Iron Man 3.” Killian established Advanced Idea Mechanics and believed the most effective way to accomplish his objectives was through the creation of human bombs, derived from his Extremis project.
Killian’s villainous background includes being turned down by Tony Stark when he was a young researcher, who faced numerous challenges due to various disabilities during his upbringing. However, this does not justify his hostile actions.
Prior to his demise, Killian was also involved in the abductions of Pepper Potts, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, and then-President of the United States, Matthew Ellis, portrayed by William Sadler.
Arishem
Making his screen debut in the 2021 movie “Eternals”, Arishem is portrayed as the Supreme Celestial. He crafted the Deviants to facilitate the births of other Celestials, but later created the Eternals to safeguard worlds from the Deviants when they turned hostile. In the film, Arishem appears as a divine entity, pushing for the Emergence of Tiamut – an apocalyptic event – on Earth. Fortunately, the Eternals thwarted his plot, thereby saving the planet from destruction. The malevolence exhibited by Arishem arises from his deception in concealing the Eternals’ true mission and his conviction that a single Celestial outweighs the worth of billions of humans.
Kang the Conqueror
Originally planned to be Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next major antagonist, Kang the Conqueror (portrayed by Jonathan Majors), along with his various manifestations, was first introduced in the Disney+ series “Loki”. He then assumed a larger villain role in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”. Known for his self-centeredness and thirst for power, Kang embarked on a mission to dominate every universe in the Multiverse, similar to the empire he established in the Quantum Realm. His story could have potentially caused significant destruction had it continued unfolding.
The High Evolutionary
In general terms, very few people can empathize with someone who harms animals, and this is certainly true for the character known as the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), appearing in 2023’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” This antagonist performed genetic experiments on diverse life forms, aiming to establish a utopian society populated by flawless species. The High Evolutionary’s test subjects comprised Rocket the raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Lylla the otter (Lina Cardellini), Teefs the walrus (Asim Chaudhry), and Floor the rabbit (Mikaela Hoover), among others. Many more were subjected to inhumane treatment and death under his control. The High Evolutionary’s utter disregard for animals and his evil philosophy distinguish him from most villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Thanos
While many Marvel Cinematic Universe fans argue that Thanos’ actions were logical when he wiped out half the universe, this perspective veers away from actuality. To put it plainly, Thanos orchestrated the largest genocide ever recorded in history. The idea that overpopulation and resource scarcity necessitated such drastic action was shortsighted since the universe’s population would inevitably rebound to its original size. Furthermore, Thanos paid no mind to the devastating impact his mass-killing spree would have on survivors. He never valued the persistence of all worlds; instead, he sought to play the role of a deity. Moreover, Thanos showed cruelty towards his own daughters Gamora and Nebula, callously sacrificing the former’s life and subjecting the latter to physical torment.
Red Skull
In the year 2011, Johann Schmidt, more famously known as the Red Skull (portrayed by Hugo Weaving), debuted in “Captain America: The First Avenger.” He was revealed to be the head of HYDRA, a secretive arm of Nazi Germany during World War II. In his ambition to become an eternal ruler, Schmidt self-administered the Super Soldier serum, resulting in his transformation into Red Skull. This antagonist aimed to utilize the Tesseract to fulfill his scheme for global conquest, thus earning him a reputation as malevolent and abhorrent as Adolf Hitler.
Dreykov
Imagining someone worse than a man who kidnaps girls and brainwashes them into becoming ruthless killers is nearly impossible. That’s the grim world General Dreykov (Ray Winstone) created for countless young women, including his own daughter Antonia, also known as Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko). In the 2021 film Black Widow, Dreykov was once connected to Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), and their mother, Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), all of whom were under his control. Despite being freed from Dreykov’s grasp, the emotional scars left by their ordeal cannot be fully healed.
