Dandadan Soars as Anime Flagship After Global Streaming Triumph!

Dandadan is set to make a comeback on our screens this Summer with Season 2 of the anime, and the studio responsible for it has designated Dandadan as their main project due to its remarkable success beyond Japan. The anime version of Yukinobu Tatsu’s Dandadan manga premiered last Fall with great anticipation. The anime received positive responses in the U.S. and other regions, meeting fan expectations, but it seems that it didn’t have as significant an impact on Japanese broadcasts according to the president of its production company, MBS, during a recent interview.

According to a recent report from Yahoo! Japan, during a company press conference, Mainichi Broadcasting System president Yoichi Mushiaki discussed the anime project “Dandadan.” He noted that while viewership ratings for the show on MBS were relatively low, it has gained significant success internationally. As a result, the MBS Group is designating “Dandadan” as a key title due to its streaming popularity, which was already anticipated to be higher than broadcast response.

Dandandan’s Streaming Success vs. Broadcast Ratings

In a typical scenario for anime, ratings on television aren’t exceptionally high, but ‘Dandadan’ has bucked this trend by garnering significantly more attention overseas than in Japan, according to MBS president Yoichi Mushiaki. Simultaneously airing on Japanese TV and being distributed globally across platforms like France, America, and Taiwan, it quickly climbed to the top of numerous anime rankings. However, the real proof of ‘Dandadan’s’ international success lies in its performance on streaming services such as Netflix, where it competes against non-anime content and other shows.

In simpler terms, “Mushiaki mentioned that Netflix ranked Dandadan, a non-English anime, as the second most popular worldwide among non-anime TV shows. He expressed his joy over its positive reception, noting that the series has been gaining global recognition, even though it hasn’t done as well as expected in Japan.
