After a series of cast announcements about Coronation Street, it’s now been disclosed that one of its cherished characters has agreed to extend their contract and remain in the show for some time ahead.
It’s been reported that Simon Gregson, known for portraying Steve McDonald on ITV, has apparently agreed to a fresh one-year deal with the network, keeping him in the soap opera following the conclusion of his previous contract at the end of last year.
A source revealed to The Sun, “Simon Gregson re-signed for the show in December, extending his contract. Given his status as a Coronation Street icon, it’s hard to imagine the series without him.
Since 1989, Gregson has consistently portrayed the character Steve, with the exception of a significant hiatus in 2015. Over the years, he’s become a long-standing figure on the set of Coronation Street.
The upcoming news is certain to bring joy to fans, as they’ve had to say goodbye (or prepare) to several beloved characters, such as Helen Worth, who portrayed Gail Platt in Coronation Street since 1974. She departed from the series at Christmas.
In a similar fashion, actors such as Craig Tinker’s portrayer Colson Smith, Eileen Grimshaw’s actress Sue Cleaver, Mason Radcliffe’s actor Luca Toolan, and Debbie Webster’s actress Sue Devaney are either leaving the soap opera or their characters are being removed from it.
Charlotte Jordan, who’s been portraying Daisy Midgeley since 2020, recently shared that she’ll be saying goodbye to the cast this year.
As a movie lover, I can’t help but feel a glimmer of optimism with the recent updates. Indeed, Gregson’s contract renewal brings some positivity to the table. Moreover, it’s been whispered in the grapevine that both Sally Dynevor and Michael Le Vell, who breathe life into the characters Sally Metcalfe and Kevin Webster respectively, have agreed to a fresh one-year deal.
The longest-running star of the show, William Roache, has also reportedly signed a new contract.
Amidst the continuous updates about the cast, there has been talk suggesting the soap opera might be facing a critical situation. However, more recently, Andrew Whyment, most recognized for portraying Kirk Sutherland, has refuted these claims.
On Instagram, Whyment posted: “The media seems to be filled with stories about Coronation Street these days.
I’d simply like to clarify that contrary to what one article suggests, the show is far from struggling and there has been no cast rebellion.
He mentioned: “Don’t take everything you read as the truth, at least one of the Coronation Street cast members is genuinely delighted and feels profoundly thankful to continue working on Coronation Street.
