Over the weekend, fans of the game Marvel Snap were taken aback when they found out that it had been taken down from both the App Store and Google Play Store, making it unplayable for users in the U.S. There’s been a lot of bafflement among players due to this sudden turn of events, but the app was deactivated because of the ongoing problems between ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, and the authorities. It so happens that ByteDance also owns Nuverse, the publishers of Marvel Snap. Although the shutdown of TikTok had been predicted for some time, the predicament surrounding Marvel Snap came as a total surprise – not just to players, but seemingly to Nuverse and the developers at Second Dinner as well.
On Bluesky social media, Ben Brode, Second Dinner’s chief development officer and co-founder, has spoken about the Marvel Snap issue. The team is actively trying to resolve the problem and suggests using a VPN with Canada settings as a short-term solution. Despite some fans being upset and skeptical that Second Dinner wasn’t warned in advance, Brode denied these claims. In response to one user, Brode explained that taking the game offline and then back online doesn’t generate additional revenue for them.
Though there’s been no indication so far, it seems that Marvel Snap is not facing any issues or planning to discontinue its support, either in the U.S. or abroad. This month, the game introduced a new season themed around the Dark Avengers, adding cards featuring characters like Iron Patriot and Victoria Hand. Additionally, the game recently showcased content related to Marvel Rivals. Given this, it’s unlikely that developers would make such changes without informing fans in advance. However, this news does little to comfort those who have recently invested money into the game.
I’m hoping the predicament gets resolved swiftly, allowing for the Marvel Snap to become accessible to U.S. residents sooner rather than later. Despite the ban on ByteDance-owned media receiving broad backing from U.S. legislators, it was the outgoing President Trump who was tasked with enforcing it. Interestingly, it was during his first term that Trump himself had hinted at banning TikTok. However, the ban went into effect earlier than expected, which some speculate was unnecessary given the circumstances. Now, ByteDance is optimistic that the incoming president will announce he won’t enforce the ban, despite the Supreme Court upholding it.
Currently, it’s uncertain how long the Marvel Snap ban will last. It might be lifted before any TikTok decisions are made, or we may need to wait for some announcement until after President Trump leaves office. For now, it’s anyone’s guess, but Marvel Snap players will have to resort to using VPN in the interim.
