In terms of naval battles, sword-fighting, and summoning, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is playfully exploring the concept of Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. This is deliberate, as chief producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto mentioned during a recent preview event for the game (which TheGamer attended).

View Urgent ForecastFollowing the occurrences depicted in “Infinite Wealth”, our minds wandered, wondering what became of Majima next. Given his unique personality, we imagined him in an exotic location – a tropical island in Hawaii, to be precise. Pondering over something amusing, absurd yet appealing to the audience, we thought, ‘Ah, that’s just what a pirate would do!’ This idea didn’t stem from careful planning; instead, it was more about taking existing elements and creating a cohesive storyline.
Sakamoto suggested that players should not overthink things, using Rich Island as an illustration. “This island is primarily known for its fishing, yet interestingly, many of its inhabitants are pirates dating back to the Age of Exploration. Just accept it without questioning – that’s how it is.
Just like that, Mad Dog Style also enables Majima to generate shadowy doppelgangers of himself. You might wonder, “When did this trick of splitting into ninja-like duplicates come about for Majima?” But remember, it’s all part of the enigmatic Majima. The rules are his to bend as he sees fit.
Players drawn to a more profound and somber experience in gaming will undoubtedly appreciate “Like a Dragon”. While the visuals may hint at a lighter tone, the game offers a surprising amount of deep, character-driven stories centered around intense dialogues. In fact, there’s more emotional depth in this game than one might initially anticipate. Right from the beginning, you encounter Majima who is suffering from amnesia, which sets him on a journey that deviates from his usual self, starting from an unusual position.
As a gamer, I’m excited to share that our game aims to captivate players with a whimsical premise, but it’s not just about the laughs. We also strive to demonstrate the depth of a Like a Dragon tale through characters who embody strong convictions, powerful emotions, unique beliefs, and distinctive lifestyles. The emotional bonds and dramatic narratives between these characters are what truly make this journey unforgettable.
The game titled “Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii” is set to release on February 21st, available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, and PC. This title promises to be larger than the spin-off game “Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name“, as claimed by RGG Studio. Besides venturing through multiple islands, players will have the opportunity to delve into the entirety of Honolulu from the previous game “Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth“.
