This game stands out as my preferred choice among all in the series. It’s a hack-and-slash RPG set during the historical Three Kingdoms era of China. You assume the role of a soldier enshrouded in mystery, who aims to influence the destiny of China. Although I consider it my favorite in the series, I encourage you not just to take my word for it.
Over the weekend, Dynasty Warriors: Origins came close to having around 70,000 players online simultaneously, with a peak of nearly 69,500. In contrast, the last four games in the series have only managed to gather about 3,900 players playing together at once. This is approximately 17 times more players than the latest game has.
This game not only outperforms other Dynasty Warriors titles in terms of success, but it also boasts the second-biggest launch among all Koei Tecmo games. In a post by Alejandro from Game Discover Co, he crafted an informative graph highlighting the variations between them.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins vs. Wo Long
Despite Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty holding the record for the biggest launch in the company’s history, they might be more elated with the success of Origins. Currently, Wo Long is receiving a mixed response on Steam, with an approval rating of 47%. Compare this to the impressive 94% positive feedback that Dynasty Warriors: Origins has earned, and it’s clear that the latter likely contributes to more stable sales.
Although Dynasty Warriors has fewer Steam users (approximately 6,000 less), it’s challenging to conceive that Wo Long was more financially secure on the platform. Given Steam’s lenient return policy, I suspect many copies of Wo Long were returned. However, this doesn’t diminish Wo Long’s overall success, which exceeded 3.8 million players in under two months. Instead, I’m emphasizing the remarkable achievement of Wo Long by Origins in a series typically considered niche.

I must admit, it’s been some time since I truly relished playing Dynasty Warriors. However, this latest installment seems to be a significant leap for the series and offers a refreshing take without losing sight of what made its predecessors enjoyable. I must admit, I’m somewhat puzzled by how they managed to create police battles reminiscent of Ghost of Tsushima and crowd scenes resembling a Warriors game, yet they successfully achieved this. It’s been ages since I’ve played a Warriors game, but as a fan of the genre, I can confidently say that this is one of the best Warriors games in years.
Instead of simply producing another Dynasty Warriors game, they chose to create an exceptional one, which I thoroughly enjoy and consider one of my favorite gaming trends. From its gameplay to voice acting, everything is significantly improved. I do pine for the days of Cow Cow; farewell, Cow Cow, you were truly unique.
Previously, I expressed my affection for this game, but let me gush about it a bit longer. Dynasty Warriors: Origins is the refreshing update that this series has been longing for. Whether you’re drawn to its deep, immersive storyline or the incredible feat of engaging in battles with thousands of enemies simultaneously, you’re in store for an exhilarating journey.
