Red-Hair Shanks, cherished character from One Piece, stands not just as a Yonko but also serves as Luffy’s inspiration. When Luffy was young, he encountered a pirate crew in Foosha Village, and it was Shanks who left a lasting impression on him. In a fateful encounter, Shanks sacrificed his arm to save Luffy from a sea king. Although he had the strength to effortlessly defeat the sea king, Shanks wanted Luffy to understand the perils that await a pirate if they aspire for greatness. Luffy’s recklessness nearly claimed his life, and it was only due to Shanks’ intervention that he survived. After a brief stay in Foosha Village, Shanks went on to make a name for himself in the New World, eventually rising to become a Yonko.
Despite being just a Yonko, Shanks’ power significantly outmatches both Kaido and Big Mom. Over time, he has battled numerous powerful opponents. Given that Imu’s powers remain undisclosed, no current character has displayed strength even close to the Red-Hair Yonko. Moreover, we’ve only caught a glimpse of his true abilities thus far. In light of all available evidence, Shanks is likely the strongest character alive; however, Mihawk’s title as the World’s Strongest Swordsman serves as an obstacle for him.
Shanks Has Always Been Hyped in One Piece Because of His Strength
Beyond famous pirates such as Roger, Whitebeard, and Xebec, Shanks stands out as a character who seems to possess unprecedented power. Creator Eiichiro Oda never misses an opportunity to emphasize his strength in any given situation. In One Piece Chapter 533, it’s mentioned that Shanks single-handedly stopped Kaido from reaching Marineford and ended the war there. What makes this even more remarkable is that he merely needed to confront pirates and marines, causing them to surrender without a fight. Not even the Admirals or Warlords dare to face off against the Red-Haired Pirates, especially after their encounter with the Whitebeard Pirates.
He earns respect and dominance among even the highest-ranking Marines, showcasing exceptional Future Sight and Advanced Conqueror’s Haki throughout the series. In Chapter 1079, he defeated Eustass Kidd and Killer with a single strike. Prior to Kidd attacking them, Shanks had a vision of a grim future in which the young pirate inflicted a catastrophic blow on his crew. Without hesitation, he employed Divinde Departure against him. Notably, Kidd is one of the most powerful pirates in the New World, with a bounty of 3 billion berries. His collaboration with Law helped bring down Yonko Big Mom.
Furthermore, in the 1122th chapter of “One Piece,” Emet employs Joyboy’s Haki, which Shanks had previously compared. This Haki caused Imu, the enigmatic ruler of the world, to kneel from miles away. Dorry and Brogy, two giants who have been pirates for over a century, felt the power behind that Haki and speculated whether it was stronger than Shanks’. They have traversed the globe, encountered numerous powerful individuals, but in such a situation, Shanks is the one they consider first. In “One Piece” Chapter 1136, these giants disclosed that Shanks had thwarted Loki, Elbaf’s Prince with a bounty of 2.6 billion berries, after all other warriors had failed.
Mihawk Still Holds the Title of the World’s Strongest Swordsman
Since the East Blue Saga, Mihawk has been widely acknowledged as the World’s Strongest Swordsman. He serves as a formidable challenge for Zoro, who aims to surpass him and eventually become the first mate of the Future Pirate King. However, despite this title, Mihawk hasn’t demonstrated any abilities that surpass those of Shanks. His most notable achievement in the story is his past encounter with the Red-Hair pirate, which ended inconclusively. During the Marineford Arc, Mihawk was among the Warlords, but he didn’t contribute anything particularly remarkable. It’s possible that he wasn’t particularly invested in the war to begin with.
The issue seems to stem from his depiction. He’s often regarded as one of the most prominent characters without any significant accomplishments to back it up. He’s known for being laid-back and uninterested in fame or wealth, which often leads to him being overlooked because he hasn’t done anything particularly noteworthy yet. This is rather disappointing, especially given that his introduction was one of the most impressive in the entire series. Even though the One Piece manga has reached its Final Saga, it’s still unclear if he possesses Conqueror’s Haki. Surprisingly, the title seems to suggest that he should be ranked higher than Shanks in terms of power, despite all evidence to the contrary.
It’s uncertain whether Oda plans to settle the dispute between fans of Mihawk and Shanks. However, given the current trajectory of events, there’s a possibility that Mihawk might merely become a plot device, serving as Zoro’s adversary. The reason he still matters in the story is because Zoro must surpass him. Following the Reverie, Mihawk allied with Buggy and Crocodile, letting Buggy take charge publicly. His motives are unclear, but for Mihawk to make a significant impact on the story, he’ll need to demonstrate something equally or even more impressive than Shanks.
