Fans of Doctor Who are evidently unwilling to see Steven Moffat depart from the series, as they have been flooding social media platforms, asking for more tales penned by him.
The screenwriter played a leading role in directing the sci-fi drama during the well-liked tenures of Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi, and is also credited with inventing the Weeping Angels in the highly regarded episode titled “Blink”.
More recently, he has written Season 14 thriller “Boom” and the upcoming 2024 Christmas special “Joy to the World.” In these works, Ncuti Gatwa portrays the Fifteenth Doctor, who uncovers a conspiracy at a supposed Time Hotel.
So far, only Russell T Davies, along with himself, has been revealed as a writer for Doctor Who season 15. However, there are enthusiasts who hope that Steven Moffat might contribute at least one more episode to the upcoming season’s roster.
Comments on a recent private Instagram post by Moffat, featuring a TARDIS, indicate that many fans of Doctor Who are expressing hopes – or even demands – for him to provide additional content for the ongoing BBC series.
“I would cheer if you went back to writing [Doctor Who],” said one comment.
A different user expressed that they’d enthusiastically bounce around, potentially disturbing their lower floor neighbors, should Moffat reveal any new Doctor Who news, even if it caused frustration.
Someone expressed their wish that Steven Moffat would pen another episode featuring Alex Kingston’s beloved character, River Song, one more time, as the character recently had her final live-action appearance in a Christmas special which marks its decade anniversary this year.
Moffat has also worked on various projects after Doctor Who, including BBC dramas like Dracula and Inside Man, HBO’s The Time Traveler’s Wife, and the comedy-drama Douglas is Cancelled on ITVX. Notably, these works brought him together with his former Doctor Who co-star, Karen Gillan.
In my humble opinion as a movie critic, the latest Doctor Who episode, titled “Joy to the World,” was generally well-received by critics, yet it sparked a bit of controversy among dedicated fans. The reason being, Steven Moffat chose to end the character arc of Nicola Coughlan’s Joy in a way that left some viewers feeling let down. However, in a recent interview, Moffat has shared his rationale for this creative decision.
