The long-awaited “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth” will make its debut on PCs starting January 23rd, nearly a year after its initial release on PS5. With numerous accolades and an abundance of positive critical reception, there’s a great deal of anticipation surrounding this computer version.
Essentially, the narrative and content remain identical without any planned DLC, but there are enhanced graphical features making it superior to the console version. Here are 15 crucial points about this critically-acclaimed RPG that you should consider before purchasing its PC version (currently offering a 30% discount until release).
Setting
In essence, without giving away too much of the story from the first part, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth broadens its horizons beyond Midgar, taking players on a journey through various regions. Starting from the peaceful hamlet of Kalm, you’ll traverse vast plains, explore coastal cities like Junon and Costa del Sol, among other places. However, some locations found in the original game are missing in Rebirth, but they will be included in the third installment. Similarly, Cid’s airship, the Highwind, is absent in this version. Yet, the world abounds with side missions and hidden secrets, as well as towers to discover nearby activities, just like in the original game.
Exploration and Traversal
In Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the standout aspects are likely the expansive open areas rather than the linear ones. These spaces are so large and varied that they offer different types of Chocobos, each with distinct movement capabilities, such as climbers and flyers. Additionally, you’ll have a buggy at certain points, allowing you to navigate diverse terrains with ease.
Characters
In this sequel, we see the return of characters such as Cloud, Tifa, Barrett, Aerith, and Red XIII, all boasting fresh talents and techniques. Notably, this time around, Red XIII is available for gameplay, sporting a Vengeance Mode that enhances his offensive power and speed while simultaneously draining enemy health. Additionally, the character Yuffie becomes part of the team following her introduction in Episode INTERmission; she retains her ability to empower weapons with various elements.
Lastly, let me introduce Cait Sith; his abilities alter depending on whether he’s riding his Moogle, and chances are you’ve been saying his name incorrectly since the initial Final Fantasy 7. Of course, there are other characters that will cross your path, although some, like Vincent Valentine, aren’t playable. However, you’ll have to experience it yourself to see who they are.
Combat Improvements
As a gamer diving back into the world of this game remake, I’ve noticed that the combat system is familiar with its ATB Gauge and Limit Breaks, but there are significant enhancements. For one, you can now acquire dual-type Materia, allowing me to wield two distinct elements simultaneously. Folios serve as upgrade tools for my characters, granting them SP points and unlocking Synergy Abilities. Plus, new Summons like Phoenix, Bahamut Arisen, Titan, and others have been introduced, adding a fresh layer of excitement to the battles ahead.
Synergy Abilities
Additionally, you’ve gained Synergy Abilities, which are like strategic collaborations between two characters within your party. These interactions can trigger potent attacks capable of inflicting significant damage either at close quarters or from a distance. Moreover, some defensive options are also included. The most appealing aspect is that these abilities don’t deplete ATB bars, offering an extra means to overpower your foes.
Mini-Games
Among the essential elements that shape the experience of Rebirth, mini-games stand out as a key component. Queen’s Blood is an independent card game featuring its own side quest line, while Fort Condor provides a delightful tower defense experience. Moreover, the Junon Parade has grown into something grand, and the Gold Saucer teems with attractions like Galactic Saviors, G-Bike, 3D Brawler, and more. While you don’t have to master them all, they undeniably add a lot of extra enjoyment to the game.
Nvidia DLSS and VRR Support
Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super-Sampling (DLSS) comes built-in to boost your game’s frame rate, making it ideal for users dealing with performance issues. Moreover, the developer has verified that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) technology is compatible, a beneficial feature considering the increased frame rates.
Up to 4K and120 FPS support
On PS5 and PS5 Pro, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is limited to a visual resolution of 4K/60 FPS, achieved through PSSR’s upscaling. The PC version, however, not only supports resolutions up to 4K but also offers frame rates as high as 120 frames per second. In essence, for the most visually stunning experience with this RPG, the PC version appears to be the best choice.
Graphics Presets and Options
Although all graphics options haven’t been disclosed yet, there will be three predefined settings: Low, Medium, and High. Additionally, players can manually adjust the level of detail and texture quality for the background models, which could potentially improve the overall visual experience. This implies that the PC version is expected to deliver the best graphical accuracy.
Lighting Improvements and Customizable On-Screen NPC Count
In simpler terms, the creator is highlighting enhanced lighting adjustments and superior light rendering in the PC version. These improvements extend to cutscenes, making them appear even more vivid than before. Additionally, you have the option to tailor the quantity of Non-Player Characters (NPCs) on screen for additional performance benefits.
DualSense Support
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that Sony’s PC port of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is designed to work with the DualSense controller, much like other PS5 exclusives they’ve transferred over. This means that players who have been engrossed in the console version can effortlessly transition their gaming experience to a PC setup, thanks to controls that remain the same.
Keyboard and Mouse Support
Players who enjoy using a mouse and keyboard will be delighted to know that the game “Rebirth” is compatible with those inputs on a PC. Additionally, you have the flexibility to customize the functions of these controls, as there are distinct settings for combat, mini-games, and exploration.
Steam Deck Support
Experiencing such an adventure on-the-go would indeed be extraordinary! Although the developer hasn’t officially declared it as “Steam Deck compatible,” they are actively working on improvements to make sure the Steam edition operates smoothly on this portable device.
PC Requirements
In simple terms, to run Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth smoothly on PC, even at the lower end, the system requirements can be quite demanding. To play at low settings and 1080p/30 FPS, you’ll need a Ryzen 5 1400 or equivalent Intel Core processor, an RX 6600, Arc 1580, or GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card, and 16 GB of RAM. For a smoother experience at medium settings and 1080p/60 FPS, consider having a Ryzen 5 5600, Ryzen 7 3700X, Core i7-8700, or Core i5-10400 processor, an RX 6700 XT or GeForce RTX 2070 graphics card, and again, 16 GB of RAM. It’s important to note that for 4K resolution, regardless of settings, a GPU with at least 12 GB VRAM is required.
To enjoy high-quality gameplay at 4K/60 FPS, it’s essential to have a GPU with at least 16GB VRAM, such as the Radeon RX 7900 XTX or GeForce RTX 4080. Alongside this, a powerful CPU like the Ryzen 7 5700X or Core i7-10700 is needed. A minimum of 16 GB RAM should also be installed.
For optimal performance, Windows 11 64-bit is required to meet both Recommended and Ultra settings. Additionally, prepare a sizable amount of storage space on a solid-state drive (SSD), as the installation will require approximately 155 GB.
Playtime
There’s been a lot of discussion regarding the extensive gameplay of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, with its developer previously stating that it contains twice as much side content as the Remake. Indeed, according to HowLongToBeat, on average, completing the main story and additional content takes approximately 91.5 hours (with just the main story requiring around 47.5 hours). If you choose to finish everything, it could potentially take up to about 167 hours.
