TeamKill Media’s Controversial Decision: No PC Release for Code Violet!

TeamKill Media’s decision to withhold the release of their upcoming game, Code Violet, exclusively on consoles instead of PC has sparked a wave of criticism. Their explanation, shared on X, has been met with disapproval due to its patronizing tone and perceived self-righteousness, leaving both gamers and content creators puzzled.

Regarding queries about a PC edition of Code Violet, our decision not to release one stems from our intention to prevent modifications that could lead to indecent or offensive representations of the main and secondary characters within the game.

We hold our voice actresses and actors with high regard, as well as our…

In its full statement, TeamKill Media wrote:

Regarding queries about a PC version of Code Violet, let me clarify our stance. While we appreciate your interest, we’ve chosen not to release it on PC due to concerns over modifying explicit versions of our characters. We have deep respect for our voice actors and actresses, and our creative vision for the game and its narrative is paramount. We refuse to compromise this by allowing sexual modifications that might trivialize our work and potentially harm the reputation of our talented cast. The potential additional revenue doesn’t outweigh the importance of preserving the integrity of our creation.

The declaration appeared rather arrogant to several people, suggesting that the creative and modification-focused PC gaming community was being looked down upon by the studio as if their “art” was inferior. Furthermore, it unintentionally repelled a vast portion of prospective audience by presuming negative motives on their part.

A Firestorm of Backlash

I quickly faced criticism when my remarks were made public, with influential figures within the gaming community calling me out on them. (TeamKill Media being the subject of their critique.)

YouTuber Vara Dark delivered a scathing critique on X.

It seems the proposed action is to penalize an entire gaming community for the possibility that some members may manipulate the game in undesirable ways, similar to refusing to serve food at a restaurant just because someone might add sauce.

Your artistic vision can still shine. Let the audience…

She questioned, ‘Is it fair to penalize an entire gaming community because some members might modify the game in ways that aren’t pleasing? That’s like refusing to serve food at a restaurant because someone adds sauce. Your creative intent should be allowed to shine. Let players choose their own experiences with your game. Modifications are just another form of expression, not a direct threat to your art. Perhaps you should trust your community more?’

Her analogy underscored the illogicality of dismissing all PC gamers due to potential disapproval towards mods created by TeamKill, which they find offensive. Over time, mods have been a cherished aspect of PC gaming, adding depth to games and prolonging their playability in manners that profit both players and creators alike.

Francesco Solbak of That Park Place took the critique further on his X page.

Aren’t you overlooking the contributions of modders in making Skyrim popular? The truth is they played a crucial part. And just because Rule 34 is still around, don’t act like you’re morally superior when it comes to “vulgar characters.” Remember, someone on your own team had…

He inquired, “Were you implying that all modders are crude?” The truth is, Skyrim wouldn’t have achieved such popularity without the contribution of these creative individuals. And let me remind you, Rule 34 is still a thing, so pretending to be morally superior about ‘vulgar characters’ isn’t exactly accurate. After all, one of your team members was in charge of designing the revealing outfit on your main character. Just saying!

Solbak’s argument underscores a notable contradiction: numerous creators design characters to be alluring, but express surprise when their audience interprets and expands upon these characters in creative ways, sometimes veering away from the creators’ original visions.

YouTuber and That Park Place contributor Culture Casino added another layer of critique.

Micah expresses his preference for avoiding profit-driven motives, stating that he doesn’t wish to engage in business activities where someone might perform actions displeasing or uncomfortable to him. While this stance may face criticism from some quarters, it seems that any future ventures involving public offering or sale would primarily be driven by financial gain. All the best.

Micah stated, “We prefer not to pursue profit because it could lead to actions we disagree with or make us uncomfortable.” Referencing Micah Jones, owner of Kill Team Media, he implied that if they ever choose to go public or get sold in the future, their primary goal would be financial gain. Good luck handling criticism from the politically correct community.

The sentiment underscores a common truth about video game production: frequently, success is tied to making games that are user-friendly and earning the confidence of the gaming community, especially the bustling PC gaming scene.

A History of Condescension?

TeamKill’s statement reflects a common pattern among developers who employ virtue signaling to divert criticism or boost their moral standing. While safeguarding voice actors’ reputation and maintaining artistic authenticity are legitimate issues, labeling modifications as automatically “ruining” a game’s vision or damaging reputations seems out of touch and disregards the player community.

Modifying groups have traditionally enriched gaming experiences, as demonstrated through games such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Cyberpunk 2077.

By ignoring PC gamers, TeamKill Media misses out on a prosperous market segment and estranges an enthusiastic group of creators who have significantly enhanced numerous games with their ingenuity and innovation.
